Frida Kahlo’s “Self-Portrait with Monkey” from the Dolores Olmedo Museum in Xochimilco, Mexico is “guesting” in the Winter Palace. There is nothing extraordinary in the choice of this work for the first display of the famous Mexican artist in the Hermitage — the self-portrait was her visiting card and, perhaps, the principal genre in all her work. Kahlo painted her first self-portrait when she was confined to bed for nearly a year after a serious accident and the only available subject was her own reflection in the mirror above the bed. Frida later said: “I paint myself because I am the subject I know best”. Her self-portraits, which tell of her physical pain and mental suffering, are devoid of pychologism. Until 10 January.
