It was on the Ambastala at the Missaka mountain, just 12km away from the city of Anuradhapura that King Devanampiyatissa (Beloved of the Gods) had this strange experience that introduced Sri Lanka to a whole new way of life.
The first postage stamp was issued in Sri Lanka in 1857 bearing the portrait of Britain's Queen Victoria. Since that time, a total of 478 stamps have been printed, which are broadly divided into two categories - pre and post Independence in 1948, the great majority of stamps portrayed the reigning monarchs of the United Kingdom, while the stamps of the post-independence period have mainly been characterized by pictorials depicting a variety of themes and commemorating important occasions or celebrations.
The main thing about rice and curry meals is that they are never the same in taste. And for most Sri Lankans, rice and curry can be downed at every meal, including breakfast.
Dumbara mats have rustled their way into arty drawing rooms and plush hotel suites, discovered anew by the designer industry. The attraction for decorators and designers is no doubt in their low cost as much as the distinctively local flavour they bring into an interior.
