The Home & Design TRENDS annual awards issue documents the work of the winners of the TRENDS Awards 2017. This issue highlights the accomplishments of prominent architects and designers from across the country, including Khosla Associates, Matra Architects, Rooshad Shroff and many more.

It’s that time of the year again. D/code 2020 returns to Mumbai on March 7 and 8, and this issue will give you a lowdown of everything you can expect – captivating panel discussions, arresting installations and some of the country’s best décor and design brands. Besides this, get your monthly dose of residential and commercial spaces besides public art, futuristic concepts and newly introduced products.

Have you ever had the feeling that you are living in your own microcosm, and there’s a whole other world that exists beyond your own? We got that feeling when interviewing artists Sanchayan Ghosh and TV Santhosh for the cover feature. Their perception of the world we live in and their reaction to the things happening around us, and how they find a form and expression in their art form…it’s all so layered, complex and textured. It left us thinking, that art needs to be a part of our lives as much as architecture or design. We also spoke to Marc Thorpe, and his idea of relational design that’s constantly transforming. Featured projects include homes by CollectiveProject and Thought Parallels Architecture and commercial spaces by SAV Architecture + Design and Studio Renesa.

When we decided to feature Brinda Somaya of SNK on our cover, and interview Vishaan Chakrabarti of PAU for the magazine, we didn’t realize how parallel their approach to architecture and design is. The dialogues or rather the conversations veered from singular projects to the larger landscape of urban planning, setting the stage for the kind of architecture we can expect to see in 2020, and the next decade. Featured projects include a minimal home by Design Experiment, a grand brick house by Atelier Landschaft and a boutique hotel in Kochi by Studio HBA.

The TRENDS November issue is out! As always, we've put together a heady mix of residential and commercial spaces, products, artworks and design concepts, fronted by artist and architect Martand Khosla. Read this chat with TRENDS editor Seema Sreedharan about nurturing a creative mind in an urban setting. Another interesting interview is our exclusive talk with Neri&Hu; in Shanghai, and what makes them one of the most aought-after architecture duo in the world. In addition, we explored the international design scenario this past month, and came back with two stupendous features on the best of PAD London 2019, and Mumbai-based Case Design's craft-based exhibition in Antwerp.

Nothing impacts the world more than architecture. Buildings, while they are an extension of our dreams and aspirations, it impacts the way we live, work and more importantly, the way the world looks. While architecture should be aesthetic, it is imperative for it to be sustainable and contextual. It should respond and resonate with its surroundings, be mindful of the topography. And this is precisely why the works of Seattle-based Olson Kundig’s work struck a chord with us. Two of the firm’s principals take our cover this issue, where we discuss their raw and contextual residences. The rest of the issue, as always, its packed with all things good; design that evokes curiosity, art that provokes and amazes, and spaces that are architectural wonders.

It's our 9th anniversary! We're almost a decade old in the industry and we celebrated this milestone with two powerhouses of architecture - Shimul Javeri Kadri and Rajiv Parekh, who came together for the first time ever for a conversation about architecture, art, feminism and ambition. Read all about their conversation in the September issue. Special features include an in-depth look at the Louis Vuitton X exhibition celebrating 160 years of design collaborations, an exclusive interview with industrial designer Michael Young and a handpicked list of some of the most innovative products launched in the last few weeks.

The TRENDS Product Design Special issue celebrates everything from the classic armchair by Alessandro Mendini to modern-day products by upcoming designers from across the world. For our cover story, we met Nikhil Paul, the Delhi-based light designer who's been lighting up the path to minimal yet modern illumination pieces. We also have an exclusive chat with British designer Benjamin Hubert, who reveals what it takes to meld technology with simple products for daily use. Our regular dose of residential and commercial spaces features architects like Serie Architects, Aamir and Hameeda Sharma, Ali Baldiwala and Thought Parallels Architecture.

In the past few months, a lot has happened in the world of design. Unbelievable experiments in art, incredible innovations in design, and some mind-blowing collaborations exhibiting the fluid, osmotic nature of design. For us, the observers of the design world, it’s been an exciting few months. In this issue, we bring you the highlights from the playgrounds of design – Venice, Milan and Coachella. The year has started on a design high. And we are ecstatic.

We dedicate this issue to residences – opulent, decadent, earthy, contextual – that enamoured and lured us in with their design language. We met the architects and designers who expressed the owner’s dreams or imaginations in space and form. To be precise, this issue is all about homes that are architectural and design marvels. 

What began as a mere thought, as one of the ideas that sounded promising in one of our edit meetings, has now established itself not just as one of the biggest properties in WWM, (we aren’t being shamelessly arrogant here) but as one of the biggest luxury decor and design events in the country. You guessed it right, we are talking about D/code — India’s first curated luxury living show. It all seems so surreal. Looking back, it seems like a blur. It felt like a gargantuan task back then. That’s then. Now, we are revelling in our success. If we may say so ourselves, with D/code we’ve initiated a seismic shift in the design industry.

We take this moment to thank our curators, Krupa Zubin and Zubin Zainuddin of ZZ Architects for shaping the event, along with our panel of experts - interior designer Aakif Habib, design consultant Pramiti Madhavji and architect Sanjay Puri. Not to forget the Trends Excellence Awards, which over the years has become the most sought-after recognition in the art and design industry. This year, our sixth edition, is no different, and is testament to the hands and minds that are shaping the world we live in.

We’re riding a design high. We’ve just wrapped up the second edition of D/code 2019 – a labour of love by everyone involved. It’s a heady feeling when months of deliberation, planning and co-ordinating results in a showcase that’s appreciated by the industry, friends and of course, the audience who visited and showered us with love! This support keeps us going, making us want to reach higher and dream bigger with each passing year.

We thank all of you who visited this design extravaganza! This surely was the platform to get better acquainted with all our exhibitors, whose vision contributed to the success of the show. Our speakers too, played a key role in bringing the design, art and architecture community together.

Speaking of community, let’s talk about the stars of our cover story – Katherine Chia and Arjun Desai of Desai Chia Architecture. Their tag-team effort of instilling eco-consciousness in their projects, with 
 special focus on putting community first has resulted in some stellar structures that live in harmony with their surroundings.

This issue, as always, is brimming with the best in the world of architecture and design. Our cover story, dedicated to the curatorial panel of D/code 2019, is a prelude to what’s in store for you. Helmed by award winning architects Krupa Zubin and Zubin Zainuddin of ZZ Architects, the panel brings together the biggest names in the industry — Aakif Habib, Ayaz Basrai, Lavesh Jagasia and Pramiti Madhavji. And yes, not to forget the stunning installation conceptualised by esteemed architect Sanjay Puri.

In this issue, we take you straight into the whimsical and fantastical world of modern Indian eateries, international bars and breezy rooftop restaurants.These social spaces and their makers have created a booming F&B and hospitality industry where gastronomy and design stand at par. How you feel trickles down to what you eat and vice versa, resulting in some of the most craftily designed spaces in the country.

This issue, like any other, is packed with awe-inspiring architecture, splendid art and of course, the creative geniuses behind these spectacular designs. As we bid adieu to yet another glorious year, we are excited about what the next year will have in store for us. And how much more the architects and designers are going to change the way the world looks…a little bit more!

We met three path breaking artists — Reena Kallat, Smriti Dixit and Rekha Rodwittiya and the silent forces behind them, their gallerists Shireen Gandhy, Sangeeta Raghavan and Geetha Mehra. For once, we refrained from asking questions; instead we let the conversations flow, organically, without any barriers. What unfolded were relationships that had far crossed the boundaries of professional associations, and graduated to one of immense faith and trust. In the company of these bold, dignified women, each so different, yet so alike, we came away feeling enriched.
And yes, we haven’t forgotten your regular dose of architecture and design. Read on to unravel some of the most fascinating and intriguing structures and designs.

We’re in the midst of a digital revolution; a cyclone of sorts that has shifted our attention from pens and papers to keyboards and monitors. In our opinion, technology rests, and always will, on good design. Inherently, the two have the same purpose – to make our lives easier, fuller and undeniably faster. We’re all now, willingly or unwillingly, part of a technological shift that’s brought us closer to the future (and the galaxy!) than we’d ever imagined. 

We wanted to open up this conversation about where we’re headed, what role design will play for us in the years to come, and how to accommodate it in our lives, to you. To lay down the crux, we spoke to industrial designer and innovator Yves Béhar, all the way across the world, in San Francisco. His devices are simple, although the problems they solve are anything but. His designs are meticulously crafted and result in products that will make you wonder how you ever got along without them!

Our residential and commercial features are rich in innovation too, but that of a different kind. Materials take on new meanings, and when paired with natural elements, become a lot more grounded and contextual. A great contrast to the futuristic wave we’re grappling with.

It's the 8th anniversary of Home & Design TRENDS magazine, and this special issue takes a deep dive into the future, with a foot in the present. Rahul Gore and Sonal Sancheti of _Opolis Architects feature as are cover stars, as they talk about the story of the newly launched Bihar Museum, designed in association with Maki & Associates. For a more futuristic look at architecture, we explore some current trends that are booming in design, setting the pace for the years to come. Also read about some prominent architects and designers making a difference in India's built environment - James Law, Amitha Madan, Nishita Kamdar and Sarah Sham. 

Italian architects and brothers Alessandro and Francesco Mendini take our cover this month, as they talk about their journey from the radical design movement in the 1970s to present day. In the context of the ongoing Venice Architecture Biennale, we look at some of the global design biennales that warrant a visit. We interview Aziz Kachwala of At-Tin to understand how he turns the seemingly useless into the functional. Our featured projects include residences by Arpan Shah, Dipesh Kheni, and Atelier du Pont, an office by Suchi Vora and a bar and eatery by Shantanu Garg. For our travel feature, architect Amit Khanna Rajan Goregaoker explores the meld of architectural styles in the historical city of Prague.

On the cover this month is the father-son architect duo of Kamal and Arjun Malik, as they discuss their take on design, and making it answerable to the environment. Hospitality and second-home design crosses new boundaries with our feature on glamping - a glamorous take on camping. We interview Sarah Sham of Essajees Atelier, and understand her knack of merging antique with modern, and design with art. Our featured projects include residences by Abin Chaudhuri, Kayzad Shroff and Maria Leon and KNS Architects, an office by Shabnam Gupta and a heritage property by Sanchit Arora. For our travel feature, architect Amit Khanna takes us on a virtual tour of Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum and Tadao Ando’s Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in Texas.

David Adjaye takes the cover of the March issue, as we celebrate his sculptural designs and artistic sensibilities in this special issue. The issue is the run up to D/code 2018, India's first curated art + design fair, curated by Ashiesh Shah. Published projects include Urvi Shah, MuseLAB and Mansi Pandey. For our travel feature, architect Annkur Khosla takes us to Italy.

Restore. Revive. Relive.
We're celebrating heritage architecture in India, with the forerunners of restoration architecture, Vikas Dilawari and Abha Narain Lambah. We talk revival of some of the country's most historic structures and bringing them back their lost glory. India's most creative textile designers also grab the focus this issue, to honour handcrafted design in the country. With this issue, we also introduce to you D/code, India's first curated art and design fair, put together by Ashiesh Shah and Home & Design TRENDS. D/code honours handcrafted, homegrown design that spells luxury in the country. A wide array of projects also come into the lens, by designers like Sunil Patil, Ashish Kesurvala, Swapnil Sawant and Pallavi Dean. To round it all up, architect Amita Kulkarni travels to Copenhagen to experience its vibrant culture and architecture.

The icon of architecture, BV Doshi graces our cover this month, with his unique take on architecture and design. We discuss some of his most legendary projects, besides his design philosophies and ideals. Design studio FUKSAS' globally-relevant projects and products are also in focus this issue, besides projects by Studio Lagom, Sneha Divias Atelier, Neogenesis + Studi0261, SAV Architecture + Design, March and White and Bheru Jangid. We analyse Framlab's unique Homed proposal for this without shelter, and also look at Anton Rodriguez's photography exhibition that documents the work desks of London’s most creative minds. To round it all up, architect Alfaz Miller takes us on a journey of the sights and sounds in Sri Lanka.

This month is about standout projects, and who better to take our cover than Ayaz Basrai of The Busride Design Studio. Also taking the eclectic route is architect Bjarke Ingels who is bringing about a design revolution with his future-forward structures. The innovative playgrounds by MONSTRUM will invite adults and children alike, and street art in London will call for a visit. Additionally, we're showcasing stunning projects by Archis Patel, Dipen Gada, Kavan Shah, FADD Studio, Manish Dikshit, Rajesh Patel, Abdul Hameed and Playgroup Studio. To round it all up, architect Rajiv Parekh takes us on a journey through Sweden, captured through visuals that document architecture, design, culture and life in the Scandinavian nation.

Architecture and design in India is growing at an unprecedented speed, and this issue, we're celebrating the most interesting structures ever built. This month’s Power Grid made our jaws drop as we were putting it together. The sheer magnanimity of thought and ability that some of these structures hint at, it would have been a privilege to meet their creators…designers and builders. We look at green design, India's most stunning heritage structures and the most striking subway stations around the globe. Daniel Rueda and Anna Devis' engaging pictures will have you hooked, while design concepts like a house of cylinders will tug at your creativity. Additionally, we're showcasing stunning projects by Rajiv Kasat, Studio Ardete, Group DCA, KNS Architects, Ritesh Mehta, Sanjay Murali and Ayesha Puri.

This October, 29 of India's best product designers grab the spotlight, as we delve into the intricate craftsmanship that makes their products wholly Indian. Our cover stars, Divya Thakur and Rooshad Shroff lead the way, as we find out the quirks and nuances of the minds behind some of the country's most creative product design studios. With this issue, we celebrate not only their products, but also their single-minded focus on rooting these products in India, while keeping them globally relevant. 
Additionally, this month's Power Grid showcases the most design-oriented cities in the world. This September, we're celebrating the 7th anniversary of TRENDS, with bold designer — Sussanne Khan — as our cover star.
