Then being struck by the idea of appearing at his own funeral, he hunts for buried treasure in a haunted house with Huck. He falls in love with Becky Thatcher and enjoys the new found freedom. Tom pursues Becky and persuades her to get engaged by kissing him. Their romance soon collapses when she discovers that Tom was engaged to another school girl.
