Seldom are business houses able to endure changing fortunes and the vagaries of time to script a 123-year-old legacy, as has the SVP Group. Founded by Seth Shri Vallabh Pittie in 1898, the group has traversed diverse businesses and multiple generations to pass on the baton to Vinod Pittie, the man currently at the helm of affairs, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. A leading manufacturer and exporter of cotton yarn and textiles, the group is on its way to fulfilling its vision of becoming a world leader in the manufacture of yarns, fabrics and garments.

With sustainable practices gaining momentum in view of the adverse effects of climate change, the solar energy solutions sector has seen a growth spurt in recent years. Among those to register high growth is Kolkata-based Vikram Solar which has emerged a leader in high efficiency photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing and as provider of comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solutions. We bring you a Q&A with Gyanesh Chaudhary, the managing director of Vikram Solar, under whose leadership all this growth has been accomplished.

The Jaipur-based KGK Group counts among the biggest jewellery houses in the country, commanding a global presence with offices and operations spread across the world. A privately held conglomerate with multiple business verticals that include gemstone mining, diamond processing, jewellery manufacturing, jewellery retailing and distribution, much of the group’s growth is credited to vice chairman Sanjay Kothari, whom we have featured in this issue.

Marwaris may no doubt be synonymous with enterprise and wealth creation, but they are almost as well known for philanthropy. Doing one’s mite for the less privileged is in fact ingrained in the Marwari ethos. There are those, however, whose dedication to philanthropy takes on a larger dimension, as is the case with Kashi Murarka and son Dr Aneel Murarka, the owners of Mirachem Industriies, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. The Murarkas’ contributions in the domains of charity and philanthropy have in fact earned them more prominence than their credentials as a flourishing Mumbai-based chemical manufacturer.

Sharing a part of one’s wealth may come easy for the wealthy, but there are those selfless individuals too in the Marwari community for whom philanthropy is a career choice and an unflinching dedication. Padma Shri Kailash Chandra Agarwal ‘Manav’, the founder-chairman of Udaipur’s Narayan Seva Sansthan, is one such individual. What started with a desire to provide free meals to harried attendants of poor patients in government hospitals has grown into a mammoth institution today which serves the underprivileged and the differently-abled, especially poor children, through its 480 branches across India.

Time brings change and outlooks and preferences change with each passing generation. Even for Marwaris, a community known for its rigid adherence to tradition, this holds true, as has been exemplified by Neetish Sarda of Smartworks and father Ghanshyam Sarda of Sarda Group of Companies, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. While Ghanshyam Sarda—an eminent jute baron from Kolkata—illuminates the Marwari business horizon as a stalwart of the industrialist era, son Neetish Sarda, the head honcho of Smartworks, a leading name in the business of co-working spaces, symbolises the modern generation’s penchant for new-age businesses. 

Vaibhav Khandelwal, the co-founder of Shadowfax Technologies, likewise stands out as yet another example of the changing face of Marwari enterprise. An integrated third-party logistics services provider based out of Bengaluru, Shadowfax leverages technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to offer efficient, cost-effective and agile end-to-end logistics solutions in this era of online shopping, which is rewriting the rules of the retail business. 

Kartik Gaggar of Rajasthan Studio, yet another new age Marwari, has successfully integrated his Shekhawati lineage, his love for culture and the power of information technology by creating a business that promotes the diverse arts and crafts of Rajasthan, both online and offline. Rajasthan Studio also endeavours to create and support a pan-India community of artists and build an ecosystem to empower young, budding and talented artists. 

Together with Kartik Gaggar, in a special art section, we have featured three national award-winning artists and craftsmen from Rajasthan—Ram Swaroop Sharma, Prithvi Raj Kumawat and Dr Jyoti Swaroop Sharma.

Marwari women have come a long way from times when their role was restricted to just homemaking. Today, as more and more of them prove their worth in other fields, some have chosen to walk alongside their male counterparts to take their family ventures to greater heights. We have featured two such dynamic ladies on our cover this issue: Madhu Neotia of Ambuja Neotia Group and Divya Jain of Safexpress. While Madhu Neotia’s contributions to the group’s healthcare and hospitality businesses and other initiatives intended at giving back to society deserve much commendation, Divya Jain has exemplified the tremendous potential of Marwari women through her roles of augmenting the family business and now spearheading the Safeducate initiative, which is involved in skilling youth and helping them to carve a better future.

The Covid-19 pandemic no doubt has been a huge eye-opener for the tremendous potential of the online space, but there are those whose vision and farsightedness led them to harness its power to build successful enterprises years ago. Among them is Pulkit Jain, co-founder of Vedantu, whom we have featured on our cover this issue. A tech-enabled and hugely successful platform for online coaching, Vedantu boasts over 1,000 tutors, who teach millions of paid students in addition to offering free classes, in a real-time, virtual learning environment. 

On our cover, we have also featured yet another highly successful young entrepreneur, Vaishali Neotia, the co-founder of Merxius. Meet the trailblazing Olympian, who has proved her mettle by emerging winner at numerous national and international trap shooting events.

It’s a long way to start out from a nomadic family of snake-charmers and achieve global recognition and renown, all of which Gulabo Sapera has traversed. We bring you the incredible story of the world-renowned ‘Sapera’ dancer from the Kalbelia community of Rajasthan, who has reached the pinnacle of success in spite of numerous impediments and roadblocks, including an attempt to do away with her just after birth.

In this issue, we have gone beyond our usual focus on entrepreneurs and industrialists for both our cover story and issue contents. Marriage is a serious business for the Marwari community. Long-drawn, elaborate and extravagant, the event veritably takes on epic proportions, and the logistics and the groundwork involved are monumental. We have featured Sima Taparia on our cover this issue, who has brought Marwari matchmaking into the limelight through her docuseries Indian Matchmaking, which was aired on Netflix India earlier this year. 

As a mercantile community, Marwaris may have earned widespread renown, but there are those whose capabilities in other fields go beyond many an accomplished businessman. We bring you the story of avowed weatherman Dr Laxman Singh Rathore, who has held numerous prestigious posts at both the national and international levels, especially the United Nations, and continues to serve several ministries to this day. Be it weather forecasting, or devising modern forecast methods, or dedicatedly serving the nation and mankind as an eminent agrometeorologist and scientist, Dr Rathore’s contributions are truly remarkable.

Dr Kriti Bharti’s story is no less impressive, who as founder and managing trustee of Jodhpur-based Saarthi Trust has taken the lead in annulling child marriages and has rehabilitated thousands of women and children in Rajasthan. Read about the intrepid child rights activist, rehabilitation psychologist, researcher, and philanthropist, whose ability to transform personal pain, injury, and oppression into positive action is admirable and touching.

For the scion of one of India’s most respected and traditional business families, Ananya Birla has adopted a career path not only less trodden but also distinctively unique in her own fashion. This feisty daughter of Neerja and Kumar Mangalam Birla is an entrepreneur marrying social conscience to business, a mental health activist and a songwriter and vocalist with serious talent and ambition—and all at the age of 26! She has been featured on the cover of this issue. 

Contrary to the stereotype of Marwaris as essentially hard-core, money-minded businessmen, there are those like Sanjay Kumar Jain who have excelled in other fields as well. Company secretary, entrepreneur, corporate head honcho, industry leader, mentor—Jain has done it all. With his yen for business and all his accumulated knowledge over the years, he now has turned to writing, having penned his debut book A Pinch of Salt: In the Recipe Called Life that offers advice and insights to readers looking to live a balanced and happy life. We present a Q & A with him. 

Unlike Sanjay Jain, whose love for culture began late in life, Arjun Prajapati’s love for art and culture goes back to his earliest years. A virtuoso artist and sculptor today, who has been honoured with numerous awards and recognitions, including the Padma Shri, Prajapati’s clients and admirers count among the who’s who of the world. Issues relating to mental health run deeper than most of us realise and conditions like insanity, mental and psychiatric disorders, anxieties, phobias, depression and hyperactivity are all too common in our times. Sadly, the taboos and stigmas associated with these conditions often lead to either lack of timely attention or total neglect. To redress such issues, Neerja Birla endeavours to raise awareness about mental health, demolish the stigmas associated with it and help those affected to live more enriching lives through her movement, Mpower. We have featured her on our cover in this issue.

Corporate head honchos are known for their jet-setting lifestyles and business commitments, with very little time to spare for leisurely pursuits. Gautam Singhania, the chairman and managing director of Raymond Ltd, whom we have featured on our cover this issue, however, is an exception. Bala Sarda, the founder of Vahdam Teas. By leveraging technology and eliminating unnecessary middlemen, Vahdam Teas has revolutionized the 200-year old traditional supply chain of tea in India.
Philanthropy, an integral part of the Marwari ethos, has been a tradition among Marwari industrialists and entrepreneurs and continues to be. But few perhaps match pioneering industrialist Govidram Seksaria’s generosity and lifelong commitment to philanthropy. On the other end of the Marwari business spectrum, we have well-experienced hands like Akshaypat Singhania, the grandson of industrialist Kailashpat Singhania, who now is the CMD of JK International and a director at JK Organisation. The seasoned entrepreneur has shared the story of his successful stints at the Raymond Group in the past and his latest foray in the start-up space with a `100 crore proprietorial capital to exploit India’s highly-promising start-up space.

If Marwaris are known for building and running successful businesses, they are equally well-known for their humanitarian side, with many Marwaris going so far as to give up promising careers to pursue philanthropy instead. Parinita Jain is an example. Jain helps students from government schools acquire the learning and skills required to make successful career choices and realise their dreams, through the Alohomora Education Foundation, of which she is the co-founder.
