Multipronged Approach Against Alzheimer’s Disease
In July 2023, Eisai and Biogen received full traditional approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for their Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi (lecanemab-irmb). This drug is the first to target the disease’s progression rather than merely addressing its symptoms. The approval has infused excitement and hope into the field of Alzheimer’s drug development, known for frequent drug failures. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is an escalating global health crisis. In 2020, the World Health Organisation (WHO) noted over 50 million people had dementia worldwide; 60 per cent of them lived in low- to middle-income countries. The Asia Pacific region bears a hefty burden with dementia care costs at $185 billion, straining healthcare in populous economies, according to ADI (Alzheimer’s Disease International). As we mark World Alzheimer’s Day this year on September 21, let’s take a stock of the advancements in the research and development in the Asia Pacific.

TAIWAN BIOMED INDUSTRY EYES $32B 
Biomedicine is a top priority for Taiwan, with the government aiming to position the country as the leading hub for biomedical research and development in the Asia-Pacific region. By 2025, Taiwan aims to create 20 new medicines, introduce 80 high-value medical devices to the market, and elevate the biomedicine industry into a trillion-NT-dollar (approximately $32 billion) sector. The government has taken various initiatives, established biomedicines clusters and tweaked policies to achieve this goal. Has the effort paid off? How far has the country come to achieve its goals?

TECH-POWERED WAR ON AMR
The consistent increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is threatening to undo many of the gains of modern medicine. The situation is particularly alarming in the Asia Pacific region, which could witness around 50 per cent of global annual AMR-related mortality by 2050. Around 62 per cent of antibiotics in the region are used without prescriptions, indicating inappropriate usage and significantly increasing
the risk of AMR strain emergence, according to a report from LEK Consulting Group. All this makes the region an epicentre of AMR and its consequences. A World Sans MALARIA
Malaria has long been a major public health concern in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in South East Asia (SEA) affecting millions of people. According to a latest report on malaria from the World Health Organisation (WHO), there were approximately 5.4 million cases and 9000 deaths in the region in 2021. The SEA region has nine countries where malaria is prevalent, and their contribution to the global burden of malaria cases is two per cent. India is the main contributor to the malaria cases in the region, accounting for 82.5 per cent of them, followed by Indonesia with 15.6 per cent, and Myanmar with 1.6 per cent. These three countries were responsible for almost all of the malaria cases in the region, making up 99.7 per cent of the total estimated cases. Governments, healthcare organisations, and communities are implementing innovative strategies, technologies, and programmes that can help curb the spread of malaria. Though these efforts were hampered because of COVID-19, in 2022, the WHO South-East Asia Region renewed its commitment to eliminate malaria by 2030, with countries pledging accelerated action and greater efforts at the sub-national and community levels. Other parts of Asia also progressed well. China was declared Malaria free in June 2021, after 70 years of fighting. In its fights against malaria, Asian countries have recently
announced significant investment including a $1.9 million investment in February 2023 by Japan’s GHIT Fund for the research and development of a new malaria drug, and a $1 million contribution by Singapore’s Ministry of Health to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, announced in December 2022. While observing World Malaria day on April 25, let’s explore the current status of Asia’s malaria elimination efforts, highlighting the progress made and strategies needed for a malaria-free future.

HOW PLAUSIBLE IS ENDINGHOW PLAUSIBLE IS ENDING TB SCOURGE?
Tuberculosis (TB) has been the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS for a long time. And, presently, Asia Pacific is right in the thick of it. South-eastern Asia (SEA) is home to 26 per cent of the world’s population with a 43 per cent burden of TB incidence, according to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) global TB report 2021. Over the last three years, countries around the world, including in Asia and the Pacific, have faced double pandemics –COVID-19 and TB. Unfortunately, during this time, progress toward TB elimination stalled and, in some cases, reversed. COVID-19 made it harder for people to access TB diagnostics and care, eading to increases in cases and deaths since 2019. Four countries, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar accounted for most of the estimated increase in TB deaths, globally, in 2021. Not all is lost though. The countries in the region, especially India and Indonesia, have renewed their efforts to eliminate TB. India launched the TB Free India campaign – a plan to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025, five years ahead of the target set by the UN’s sustainable development goals. Indonesia received a $300 million loan from the World Bank to improve overage, quality and efficiency of TB response in the country. When observing World TB day this year on March 24, let’s take stock of the progress made by Asian countries in eliminating this dreaded disease and the way forward.

CANCER THERAPEUTICS GAINING GROUND IN APAC
Cancer, the leading cause of death in most parts of the world, is a veritable Achilles heel for the pharma industry. AUSTRALIAN AGED CARE GETS BOOSTER DOSE    In 2017, there were 3.8 million Australians aged 65 and over (comprising 15 per cent of the total population)—increasing from 319,000 (5 per cent) in 1927 and 1.3 million (9 per cent) in 1977. The number andproportion of older Australians is expected to continue to grow. By 2057, it is projected that there will be 8.8million older people in Australia (22 per cent of the population); by 2097, 12.8 million people (25 per cent) willbe aged 65 and over according to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2017. Looking at the growing trend,the government of Australia has a separate ministry for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services andundertaken many steps to support them with respect, care and dignity. 

FAKE DRUGS BOOM PUMMELS PHARMA INDUSTRY 

Fake pharmaceuticals are continuing to flood into clinics and hospitals across Asia despite monitored regulations in China and India, when suppliers crossing the border to less-regulated countries. Counterfeiters are moving across certain less regulated locations in Southeast Asia to sustain the trade. Pharmaceutical industry is committed and thriving to sustain and secure the legitimate supply chain. Given the complexity of the supply chain, this is an essential, but laborious effort that requires an efficient, multi- faceted strategy. A holistic approach comprising the use of concealed and unconcealed anti-counterfeiting features, a well-regulated, secure supply chain and appropriate laws and penalties to deter and punish counterfeiters is necessary to provide maximum patient protection.
