In this issue

In September 2015 issue of Kalachuvadu we have focussed on Abdul Kalam with two different, opposing perspectives of him by Danapal Padhmanabhan and S.P. Udayakumar. Savitri Kannan portrays Sasi Perumal the ' Gandhian' prohibition activist who killed himself during his call for total prohibition. Karunakaran's take on Parliament elections of Srilanka, Stalin Rajangam's article on the impact of Ilayarajah's songs in context of Anti Hindi agitation and Kannan's perspective on Alcoholism and the Prohibition movement, Second part of Perundevi's two part analysis of honour killings of TamilNadu liven up the current affairs section of Kalachuvadu. On the cultural pages we have Prasanna Ramaswamy's Critique of Dheepan, the french film on Srilankan Tamil refugees in France that was much acclaimed and awarded in Cannes. This section includes interviews with Shoba Sakthi and Kaleeswari, the protagonists. A.R. Venkatachalapathy tracks down the author of a much republished article on ' Developing Tamil' through a maze of journals and libraries to its first publication in 1892. Fowzer reconstructs the literary history of Durai Raja Thambumuthu ( 1915-1983) on his birth centenary, Poet, Short Story writer, a Tamil immigrant from Sri Lanka to London. He became the editor of Poetry London in1938 was a free floating intellectual moving from London to the U.S. and then to Indian and back to London in 1968 and made in mark in spirituality and literature. Short story of Meeran Maideen, Poems of Pa. Thyagu and Nafeel book reviews, cultural reportage make for interesting and dense reading.
