The legendary chief of L&T, A.M. Naik, was to have retired five years ago gave himself a five-year extension so he could find and groom a successor. It appears that his five years have been fruitful. In an exclusive interaction Naik names his successor, and spells out his plans for the troubled conglomerate. The other buzz these days is about when Reliance will finally launch Jio, its much-vaunted 4G service. Financially of course it’s a big deal, but for Mukesh Ambani, this is the big opportunity to be seen as the torchbearer of his father’s legacy. That’s on page 106.

In other news, Elon Musk announced the 2017 release of the Tesla Model 3—and it’s going to be available in India. Musk said the company got more than 250,000 orders, giving the wags on Twitter plenty of fodder, including this: “Tesla launches the most successful Kickstarter ever.” Meanwhile, more traditional car companies, notably the 100-yearold BMW, are gearing up to meet a future that is likely to focus on nonpolluting engines and driverless cars.
