We launched Fortune India 5 years ago, with a promise that we would bring you the stories that matter, from India and around the world. In the half-decade since, we have always aimed for that. We’ve found stories everywhere—from mines deep underground to the moon.

This fifth anniversary issue’s cover story (page 100), began with an everyday discussion on how employees should constantly seek to hone their skills. From there to the government’s Skill India initiative was but a short step. And suddenly, the talk turned to the one skill everyone needed but few had: coding. It’s a sad reflection on our education system that India produces scores of software professionals. The answer lies in the way code is taught—by rote, as opposed to by practice.

Elsewhere, deputy editor Ashish Gupta looks at how machines are taking over jobs, and wonders if there’s anything left for humans - on page 112. In some ways, he’s echoing what Fortune’s senior editor-at-large Geoff Colvin says in his new book, Humans are Underrated, an adapted version of which is on page 142.

Maruti Suzuki is still the undisputed king when it comes to inexpensive small cars, but the company seems dissatisfied with that. Associate editor Pavan Lall explores Maruti’s return to an area it has failed in time and again—premium cars. Find answers on page 74.
