The feature on DG sets, 'Rising Opportunities', looked at how India’s economic growth coupled with the unreliable electricity grid has opened up a margin for the DG sets segment, which is looking at filling the gaps. The second feature on energy efficiency, 'On the Right Track', explores India's target of achieving around 30 GW of peak load energy savings by changing into energy efficient home appliances and LED lightings.

While the renew Cover on waste-to-energy, 'Pay Dirt', explains how waste-to-energy conversion can help India deal with the not only the increasing garbage disposal problem, but also address health and economic issues.

In the May 2017 edition of Power Today, the cover story 'UDAY – Turning the Tide Truly', focussed on how the UDAY scheme has brought about an initial turnaround in discom efficiency during the last one year. However, sustaining the pace is vital for bringing the power sector out of the woods. 
The first feature on coal in power - 'Future Ready', discussed that despite consisting of a major chunk of India’s energy mix, the coal sector is only now emerging from the dungeons, backed by GoI’s production targets. While the second feature on boilers & turbines - 'Replacement Market to Drive BTG Demand', found that over the next five years, it is estimated that India may need to replace the boilers to an equivalent of 50,000 MW capacity.
Our renew cover story 'Sunset Detour' focussed on hydropower and how once at the forefront of power generation in India, the sector has today fallen far behind. We took a look at what ails the sector and the possible solutions to restore its former glory.

Our cover story 'Blackouts Under Control', explored the possibility that just because we have avoided blackouts for four years, it does not mean that our grid infrastructure is robust and that implementation of plans at state level has to be expedited to yield better results. While our first feature on pumps 'Techno-Driven', found that while currently on the down low, the industry is positive of a manufacturing and technology backed revival soon. The second feature on balance of plant 'Green Shoot for BoP', looked at how from the inactive state, when the economy starts picking up, it is expected that there would be a growing gap between the demand and supply in the long term.
Our renew cover story on concentrated solar power (CSP), 'Reflection Time', impressed upon how despite dedicated solar policies with well-defined targets, there is barely any focus on CSP, and India thus needs to seriously re-think and regenerate to get the sector up and running.

'Solar Shines!', our cover story for the March 2017 edition of Power Today looked at the impact of the Union Budget on the sector, which was in particular full of sops for solar – in terms of investment, village electrification and taxes. However, we found that this calls for building renewable power compatible T&D infrastructure on a war footing. Our features were on Powerful PSUs and T&D Infrastructure. With the former focused on some of the PSUs involved in pushing India’s developmental agenda; while the latter analysed how with the Indian government looking at fortifying the T&D space and plugging the holes, the segment may be finally receiving its long overdue attention. Our renew cover on cogeneration observes that the biomass/cogeneration industry would like government support to tap its full potential with more advantageous policies.

In the February 2017 edition of POWER TODAY, our cover story 'Green Grid Gap', analysed the planned Green Energy Corridor, which is envisioned to carry 'intermittent' solar and wind power from producers to consumers efficiently. We found that the GEC is yet to catch up with the pace of capacity creation. Our feature on DG Sets, looked at how the diesel generator segment in India has seen steady rise, and unreliability of electricity grids is one of the major factors driving this market; and the one on and Oil & Gas Infra found that while the country lacks in gas infrastructure, India is already the fourth largest importer of LNG with 5.8 per cent share. The Renew section focused on wind energy, which has been in India since the 1990s. If used to its full potential, wind power can take the country's growth to uncharted shores.

The cover story ‘RECord Gains!’, evaluated and found out that Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), which did not find takers till last year, have gained prominence after the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Renewable Public Obligations (RPOs).

Our two features, first on IT in power - The ‘IT’ Factor, saw how as a crucial element for efficient operation and management of industrial systems, information technology (IT) has the potential to open new avenues for the sector; while the second on power transformers - Leaps and Bounds, looks at how buoyancy in fast tracking projects could take the segment to the next level.

In the Renew section, the cover story ‘Elemental Dissonance’, tracked that despite solar being on a roll with a slew of project announcements and government backing, manufacturing is yet to hitch onto the wagon.

The cover story 'Light at the end of tunnel', highlighted how with the advent of structural reforms in discoms, debt stress in power companies is expected to ease. However, the implementation is critical. Our Renew section cover 'Undervalued Gold' focussed on how biomass plays a vital role especially in rural areas - being used widely for household routines, but this resource has been small in terms of comparative scale in India, especially when juxtapositioned against the other green energy sources. the features highlighted the growing Cooling Towers and Pumps & Pumping Systems segments of the power industry.

The cover story for the November issue focussed on ‘Good Monsoon: A Mixed Blessing’, where we looked at how the copious monsoon has turned out to be a boon for hydro and wind power segments, while it was a bane for coal-based power and solar plants. On the renewable side, we analysed what ails the hydro power sector, which despite once being at the forefront of power generation in India, lags behind today. We also look at possible solutions to restore its former glory. Our feature on LED looked at how the LED lighting business is growing significantly and is expected to reach $1.3 billion by 2018, capturing over 50 per cent of the lighting industry; while the one on Gas Turbines & Engines found that gas turbines could be the technology of choice for the future as the laws on emission standards get tougher by the day.


In the October issue, the cover story 'Making TPPs Sustainable', looked at how the new Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) norms impose huge costs on power generators, even as they are necessary for the country in the emerging global ecosystem. It explores why the government should thus play a balancing act in this direction. 

For the features, the first one on GST, observed that while it has the potential to turn the whole country into a common market and improve ease of doing business, it is expected to be mostly neutral to power sector. The second feature, on Instrumentation & Control, saw how given the infrastructural growth in the country, high volume, low voltage switchgear and controls will continue to dominate the markets. 

In Renew, we had a special report on the status of Nuclear Energy in the country and how India’s need for power and focus on reducing carbon footprint have put pressure on the need for green energy that can be produced on a large scale; and it is here where nuclear power races ahead of its competitors. Our analysis section overviewed the 'Renewables 2016: Global Status Report' by REN21, which looks at how the world now adds more renewable power capacity annually than it adds capacity from all fossil fuels combined.

In our cover story on ‘Reviving gas-based power’, we take a look at the several such power plants that have been lying idle for a few years due to drying up of gas supplies, and how the only way to revive them is to bolster LNG imports. Our features on ‘Wires & Cables’ we analyse how upcoming investments in the power sector worth Rs 15,000 lakh crore over the next five years, will boost the wires & cables segment - which are essential to enable this development and will witness a huge growth trajectory. Our second feature on ‘Capacitors & Meters’ finds that while the smart meter initiative will pull the growth rate of meters to double digits in the coming years, the capacitor market is expected to remain in the sub-5 per cent levels.

Our  feature on ‘Smart Grids’ takes a look at the 14 smart grid pilot projects envisioned by the Government, which were small, but sure steps towards upgrading Indian power T&D infrastructure for the better. While, the feature on ‘Electric Motors’ has an overview of how the electrical equipment segment requires to adopt and implement effective energy efficient strategies to fuel growth.
