The contents of  the first issue of  Prestige Indonesia printed in 2021 was marked by a sense of  cautious optimism – of  underlying caution that was starting to make way to a newfound confidence. It is only appropriate, I would say, that we close the year with a celebration of  the latter, while acknowledging that it is only possible by still exercising the latter. As such, our It List for 2021 is much more celebratory, more triumphant. Of  particular note, I would like to draw your attention to YUNI, one of  the most recent masterpieces of  Indonesian cinema. The film has been lauded at various international film festivals, while marking a watershed moment in our country’s filmmaking culture by tackling some of  the most delicate yet pressing issues in our society. It is, to put it mildly, a masterpiece. And this time, Prestige Indonesia has the opportunity and honour to highlight to amazing women who brought YUNI to life: Kamila Andini, our Filmmaker of  the Year, and Arawinda Kirana, 2021's It Actress who also graces our cover. Joining these two amazing ladies on our list are Emily Jaury, Anderson Sumarli, Harry Halim, Afgansyah Reza, Kezia Karin, Nadya Hutagalung along with  Piotr Jakubowski and Nathan Roestandy. These outstanding individuals have made their mark in their respective fields throughout 2021, and it goes without saying that they will reach new heights in 2022. On that note, I would also like to take this opportunity to convey our thanks to our partners, who have continued to support us and allowed us to also make our mark in this year’s narrative. We certainly look forward to continue working with you in the years to come, to tell the stories that matter and inspire. In closing, I wish all of  you – our readers, our partners and supporters – a joyful holiday season, and I invite you to look for us again come next February.

As I was hosting a charming John Hardy event in April, I was once again amazed by the talent and creativity that lives around us. Craftsmanship is an art that is often overlooked in today’s fast-paced world. So, tI’m dedicating this issue to celebrating the craft of the artisan, both local and global. It gives me great pleasure to introduce the theme of our May 2023 edition: The Craft Issue. In this issue, we showcase the resurgence of age-old techniques and the drive to retain, modernize, and spotlight them. From the crafts of the gastronome to the watchmaker, the jeweller, and the elite furniture makers, we highlight how these modern artisans keep traditions alive while creating something new and exciting. Our Cover Story features Naomi Julia Soegianto, the founder of NJS Gold, one of Indonesia’s most prominent jewellery manufacturers. We delve into her inspiring journey, from her humble beginnings to the heights of success, as well as the personal touches this influential entrepreneur infuses into each piece of jewellery she creates. I am also excited to share the stories of our other compelling profiles, including – exposed for the first time on media – Alexander Kusuma, CEO of ASRI, as he shares his story and the future of the real estate company. Pasquale Jr. Natuzzi, a designer and businessperson, and Merysia Enggalhardjo, a prominent figure of SANIHARTO upscale furniture designer, also shared their thoughts. These individuals have made their mark in their respective fields, and we are honoured to showcase their stories. We also bring you a round-up of the best new hotels opening globally in 2023 and a recap of our Prestige Luxury Weekend Getaway at the new AYANA Segara Bali with selected VIPs and friends of the magazine, which I had the utmost pleasure of hosting. As always, we hope this issue inspires you and fills you with wonder and excitement, especially about the many brilliant crafts that complete our lives.

Feeding is one of the four basic and most primal instincts that humans are evolutionary adapted to have, follow and achieve. And this remains true today. The need to feed often defines our actions and motivations, so much so that the relatively modern saying “you are what you eat” was born. But in the case of our cover personality for this Taste Issue – my dear friend and favourite home cook - Yvonne Yuen, “you are what you cook” certainly rings truer. I’m always fascinated by her sophisticated interpretation of classical Shanghai cuisine, evidently the product of a deep emotional connection to her childhood memories. This is the kind of human-to-food connection we celebrate in this Taste Issue. Speaking of celebrations, I’m proud to be one of the first to announce the imminent arrival of Michelin-starred Indonesian-Dutch chef, Syrco Bakker, later this year to Indonesia with an all-new venture that will surely make waves. Read more about this exciting news in our In Focus section. Other culinary personalities in the section include eccentric MasterChef Canada judge and world-renowned chef Alvin Leung and emerging cake artist and social media sensation Sonia Basil. Each of our personalities tells a unique story about their trade and how they managed to cook up a delicious career around their shared culinary passion. Our Dining column within the Boulevard section brings you the latest selections of happening dining places in and around the region. As a special treat for this issue, we present a round-up of leisurely weekend brunches for you to enjoy. The fashion section is always busy, exciting items to highlight this Spring/Summer, such as Tory Burch’s ready-to-wear collection, and Kate Spade New York’s novelty collection.

The subject of art has long been an inspiration to those pursuing the finer things in life. I am fortunate to have seen more than my fair share of global art exhibitions. Every time, I am always fascinated by the multitude of dialogues, experimentations, and interpretations around art objects as they evolve beyond just any artist’s medium of expression.  Add design to the mix, and it gets even more enjoyable. After all, these are two fineries that every culture and civilization through time immemorial may only produce when they have reached the apex of their growth. Thus, this issue’s theme of Art & Design celebrates these two elements of human ingenuity through our regional perspective. I can’t think of anyone better suited to represent this issue’s theme as our Cover Story than my favourite art mom and esteemed art enthusiast with one of the most impressive collections, Noorani Sukardi Soeprapto. Looking at her busy schedule flying around the world organizing exhibitions and sharing the works of talented Indonesian artists, I’m very proud to feature her story in this issue. Catch our other personalities in this issue, including Carlo Colombo, considered one of the most important Italian architects on the international scene, designer duo Kyoko Inoda and Nils Sveje of the renowned INODA+SVEJE, and veteran independent fine art curator Enin Supriyanto. There is no shortage of artistic talents in Asia, and I’m dedicating our Art & Culture column to these rising artists from the region—each fully deserving more recognition and opportunity—including homegrown Alexander Sebastianus and Sinta Tantra, whose work I had the pleasure of enjoying during ART SG back in January. Look out for these rising stars because you will surely hear more of them before long. When you really think about it, art and design are inseparable from our modern way of
life.

I am proud to have my dear friend Cecilia Tjokrosetio grace this issue’s Cover Story with herinspiring journey as she skillfully navigates her duties as a key leader in the business and as a family member, all while staying hungry in her pursuit of knowledge. Every issue of  Prestige Indonesia celebrates a selection of  extraordinary figures – sometimes from the same field of  work, sometimes with a common passion, and 
always with a story to tell. And at the end of  every year, we dedicate the issue to 
a series of  extra extraordinary figures, each representing a certain profession or sphere of  influence, and every one of  them an icon in their own rights. Yes, I am, of 
course, talking about our annual “It List” – and this year’s roundup is as special as ever. That being said, this time I would like to take a moment to highlight what I see as the most important value of  this annual list: the power to inspire. The idea of 
“inspiring” and “being an inspiration” can so easily lose its meaning these days, as if 
setting the goalposts of  what counts as success is all it takes to be considered inspirational. I propose that people who truly inspire are those who lift up those around them. Case in point would be our “It Girl” this year, Nazla Alifa. A content creator by trade, she now runs a talent management company that connect her fellow creators with brands, companies, and organizations to collaborate. What really stands out from this young lady, however, was how she answered our question about what separates established content creators such as herself  with mere wannabes. And it is admittedly easy to become cynical about such a saturated profession. But Nazla simply replied: “I personally don’t think that there are content creators you can call ‘wannabes.’ We all simply want to create content.” This, I believe, is what truly makes somebody it. There are successful people who rise by surpassing others, and there are those who rise while pulling up others with them. That is why our “It List” exists. 

What is “art”? Is it limited to the arrangements of  forms, sounds, and shapes into things like paintings and music? Or can we also count the labours of  crafts that put as much emphasis on function as they do on form? How about creative expressions that are commercial in nature – those that are meant to aspire and not only inspire?  On this occasion, rather than wax philosophical, I’m inviting you, our dear readers, to see the stories of  a wide range of  figures who occupy diverse slots in the realm of  creativity. In a way, this is a themeless edition of  Prestige Indonesia; the personalities we’ve chosen to feature come from various, seemingly unrelated backgrounds. Still, there’s a common thread in that they elevate the lives of  so many people in incredibly imaginative ways... Representing the more accepted definition of  artist we have painter Evi Pangestu, who describes herself  as being a “rebellious” person and specializes in the rather abstract field of  conceptual art. For craftsmanship that is both technical and artistic, we have an interview with Augustin de Buffévent, creative director of  Fauré Le Page– a unique French luxury brand that once produced luxurious firearms for nobility and now produces luxurious bags and leatherworks, and has recently arrived in Indonesia. Then we have another creative director, Felix Tjahyadi, known for his window displays for Hermès boutiques – works that are at once commercial and imaginative. Finally, for the performance arts we have rising actress Shenina Cinnamon – a fiercely vocal rising star who is now making waves in the film industry. On their own, each story might be inspiring – and they’re certainly enjoyable. Considered as a series, there is a larger story about how every form of  artistic expression has merits that anyone can appreciate, depths that anyone willing can delve into, and values that, perhaps, we all can learn from.

Once again, Prestige Indonesia is proud to present its annual 40 Under 40 list. More than just a catalogue of  people who managed to make a name for themselves before reaching this particular milestone age, this is a catalogue of stories – always about success, but very rarely of  the instant variety. In short, the figures that make their way to our 40 Under 40 list are those that find success before their 40 birthday because they’ve managed to rise to the occasion long before that. So, in this 2022 edition of  arguably our most talked-about feature, we have stories about hard decisions and personal sacrifices, stories about breaking conventions and breaking taboos, stories of  failure and wavering wills in the face of imminent downfall. Noticeably lacking, however, are stories that involve putting family in the background to focus on work, or stories where talent and passion are swept aside in favour of  detached accomplishments. A common thread among the stories you’ll find in the pages ahead is, perhaps, balance. These are people who have managed to balance their ambitions and their passions. I think that all of  us – both over and under 40 – can find something of  value in these stories. Inspiration, affirmation, or perhaps completely new ideas. And completing this special edition is a special collaboration with Dior featuring none other than Marsha Timothy, whose latest film currently playing in theatres nationwide will definitely resonate with anyone who has lived through the ’90s in Indonesia. Essentially, our October cover story has a bit of  fashion, plenty of glamour, served with a side of  nostalgia. Happy reading...

It’s always a delight to hear about a designer’s source of  inspiration – the coast of  a faraway land, a once obscure traditional fabric, a city’s skyline – and then discovering all the references that made its way into the apparel that will soon find its way to a boutique or online shop. Of  course, what’s truly mindboggling about high fashion is how there are people in this world who can see, for example, a flower, and then think up a unique way to visualize that flower and a hundred different ways to depict it on a dozen shirts, a range of dresses, several pairs of  shoes, and a whole store worth of  bags. When you see fashion enthusiasts or connoisseurs of  haute couture rave and clamour over a certain collection or a certain designer, it’s that kind of  visionary talent that they’re so enthusiastic about. So, as is usual every year, we dedicate our September issue to the talents that drive the world of  fashion – especially here in Indonesia, and also beyond our borders. And there are always new stories to uncover and find inspiration within, such as how Sean Loh and Sheila Agatha joined forces to create a local brand, Sean Sheila, that you can now find on the official calendar of  Paris Fashion Week. And then there are stories of  those whose talent is finding and elevating that of  others, as is the case with Faye Liu who founded The Clique, a PR company that has taken many local Southeast Asian fashion designers to the world stage. And for the crowning jewel of this edition, we have yet another kind of  talent: the one and only Raisa, who shares with us her charm in a wonderful photoshoot in collaboration with Maison Louis Vuitton, and her story for one of  our most uplifting articles this year. I hope you are just as inspired and entertained by the pages ahead as we were while writing them...

Each monthly edition of  Prestige Indonesia is, more often than not, focused on a certain theme or topic, and will therefore feature notable figures who are considered influential in fields related to that theme – whether it’s travel and tourism, home and living, or fashion. But once in a while, we also like to feature stories that are simply and straight forwardly inspiring. Since I’ve mentioned travel and tourism already, I would like to first draw your attention to our interview with Indah Saugi, who is doing amazing work at In Journey in revitalizing Indonesia’s tourism and its related sectors. Then there are inspiring stories of  people changing the world for the better that we can support right now. Case in point, Hamish Daud and Octopus, a company whose goal is to minimize the amount of  trash that reaches our oceans and waterways – actually unsurprising considering the actor’s personal connection to the sea, and definitely inspiring in its simplicity and effectiveness On a more day-to-day vibe, we have the story of  how Vincent Tjendra founded and developed Astro, which offers a very convenient and speedy way to get your daily groceries. It’s certainly interesting to learn how this local company manages to make a huge name for itself, all while making life so much easier for so many households. And rounding up our line up of  inspiration, we have Junita Mogi. In her second appearance on our cover, the mother of  two shares a glimpse into the lessons she learned from raising her daughters and shed some new light into the mother-child relationship that I’m sure many of  us can relate to. Once again, we find ourselves in a period of  uncertainty, as the world tries tobalance a new sense of  freedom and dealing with new outbreaks and variants of a disease that most people have grown weary of. Still, while glimpses of  the old apprehensions are starting to manifest here and there, optimism is still the order of  the day. There has been plenty of  new success stories from the world of  business and industries, and we’ve chosen a trio of  leaders to gain new insight into how local businesses have gained new ground: There’s Yozua Makes from Plataran Group,James Prananto from Kopi Kenangan and Tessa Wijaya from Xendit. We’re also sharing with you a glimpse of  the future in a collaborative feature with Le Chateau featuring six young figures who, in the years to come, might go out and create their own mark in the world like their established seniors. And for the cover of  this issue, we partnered up once again with ERHA for a story starring the one and only Wulan Guritno. I would have liked to conclude this letter on a more positive note, but as we were wrapping up this edition of  Prestige, I received the sad news that Chris Hanrahan, our former Managing Editor, has passed away. Chris has been at the helm of  Prestige Indonesia’s editorial team for the better part of  the magazine’s history until early 2020. Even after his departure from the team, Chris still kept in touch with us and regularly contributed to the magazine. It goes without saying that he will be sorely missed as we hope to keep his legacy alive through these very pages...

After more than two years, people all over the world – myself  included and, I’m sure, many of  our readers – are looking outwards again. Travel is back on the menu,being out and about in the great outdoors is once again deemed normal, and urbanlandscapes are starting to look like their post-crisis selves. All that being said, the long months spent inside has left upon many of  us anindelible appreciation for the finer points of  homeownership. We were forced to focus on the comfort, function, and aesthetics of  our own abodes, and in many cases the elevated standards of  home décor, furnishing and interior design won’t go down anytime soon – if  ever.
So, for this issue of  Prestige Indonesia, we’ve talked with architects and interior designers, owners of  luxe furniture ateliers and more. For our cover, in particular, we’ve reconnected with Kezia Karin, our “It Interior Designer” of  2021 to gleannew insights into her collaborations with Louis Vuitton that really shone the spotlight on her interior design studio and, of  course, how she approaches residential design. You might also notice a much-expanded Living section where we go room byroom, space by space, to cover a wide selection of  top-notch products for every corner of  your home. It’s safe to say that the general mood of  the world today is: Get out more, but make sure that your home remains a sanctuary you can always come back to. Right here, we have plenty of  ideas for the latter and quite a bit of  content to inspire the former. Happy reading...

For the past couple of  years, Prestige Indonesia has continued to publish its yearly Travel Issue, highlighting new ventures and new players in the hospitality industry through stories with an underlying message of  hope. Hope that travel would soon be a normal part of our lives again. A return – even if  not yet fully so – to normalcy. And now, it’s perhaps safe to say that those hopes have prevailed. International tourists are once again flocking to Bali, new hotels are opening, and businesses of  all sorts are gearing up for business as usual at pre-pandemic levels. So, through this issue, we hope to both enlighten and inspire. For the former, we’re featuring interviews with a number of  notable figures in the hospitality industry and related businesses. We caught up with ARTOTEL’s Erastus Radjimin and Ramesh Jackson from Marriott International to gain new insight into how the hotel business is doing, and how it’s planning for the coming months – which, in turn, gives us a good indication of  how our future travel plans might look like. As the F&B business has always been a good indicator of  things to come, we also chatted with Maxime Chaurey from Flash Coffee, as well as Audrey Purwana to learn about Indonesia’s very first craft spirits distillery based in Bali. As for the part about inspiring, we’ve curated a couple of  lively round-ups for anybody looking for travelling ideas. One is a collection of  ten restaurants spread across Asia that any foodie should definitely have on their list of  must-visits. Then, for those looking for something a little bit more adventurous, we have a collection of tented resorts – glamping sites – where you can reconnect with the great outdoors while enjoying five-star comfort.

These days, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid even the mention cryptocurrencies and NFTs. They’re regularly name-dropped even in the most random conversations, they pop up in news headlines whether in print or online and even fashion enthusiasts aren’t free from them as plenty of  major brands halaunched their own NFT initiatives and released them to the world.  So, in this issue, we’re gingerly taking our first few steps into the realm of  cryptocurrencies and NFTs by reaching out and chatting with a number of individuals who certainly know a thing or two about them. As you browse through the next pages, you’ll stumble on our interviews with Kevin Susanto, Jeth Soetoyo and Pang Xue Kai. There’s certainly the risk that you’ll end up even more confused than before you read these stories, but perhaps they will instead pique your curiosity. Who knows where dabbling in either crypto or NFTs – or both – 
can lead any of us? Either way, this is certainly an area of  interest that we might explore more of in the future. On to more familiar features, our cover story for this April issue was shot collaboration with fashion designer extraordinaire Didit Hediprasetyo and his muse Bianca Lutfi. The intertwining tale of  the theme behind Didit’s latest collection andBianca’s story makes for quite an enjoyable – and inspirational – read. We also haour It Girl of  the year, Claudia Novira, along with a special story from our friendsat Prestige Hong Kong about the return of  K-pop sensation T.O.P.  So, all in all, we have quite an intriguing and exciting issue. While many are still hurting today as we enter the third year of  our generation’s worst health crisis, it’s hard not to be amazed by the number of  businesses, start-ups and entire professional fields that have thrived during the pandemic. The rise of  telehealth and delivery services was only logical; the sudden uptick in, say, garden supply stores sounded less so at first. And then there’s aesthetic medicine. In this issue, we talked to two outstanding aesthetic doctors who also happen to  be brothers – dr. Kevin Maharis and dr. Ricky Maharis. It was certainly an eye-opening chat as they talked about the rising demand for their skills and services in a world where people spend a large chunk of  the time at home in front of  screens and cameras, before getting into the details of  some of  their game-changing innovations. The most valuable part of  our conversation, I would say, are the bits about why people would look for aesthetic treatments – and how it eventually changes more than just a person’s looks. Beauty, as the saying goes, is more than skin deep. And if there’s anything we’ve learned from these two gentlemen in the profession of helping people find their most beautiful selves, it’s that being the best version of ourselves in the physical sense goes a long way in pushing us towards becoming the best version of ourselves in the most fundamental way. All in all, what we have for you in this issue of  Prestige is the origin story of  a successful business, the dynamics of  the two brothers behind it, and how a seemingly superficial profession creates meaningful change.  Speaking of  creating change, we also have a trio of  inspirational stories featuringthree amazing women, namely Cissylia Stefani van Leeuwen, Sara Tirtohadiguno,and Gitta Amelia.

This February has proven to be an especially festive month. With New Year’s celebrations only a month behind us, we’re welcoming the Year of  the Tiger while also looking forward to Valentine’s Day. The latter, in particular, was the reason behind Prestige’s February edition also being our Love Issue. Of  course, there are more facets to this emotional and mental state than just romantic love. So, in collaboration with Cartier, we’ve decided to shine the spotlight on an oft- misrepresented form of  love – the one shared by siblings. For this issue’s cover, we tell the story of  two sisters with a singular bond uniting them. Both are strong, successful individuals in their own rights; both have professed that they couldn’t live without the other. One is Michelle Maryam, an outstanding fashion designer who has made her mark in the world of  style. Her sister Cindy Ozzie, meanwhile, found her success in the uber-competitive realm of online groceries. Their shared-journey, however, is one of  love – of  small gestures and daily calls, of  business collaborations and celebrating each other’s success. Essentially, despite the prevalence of  the sisterly rivalry trope and the idea that professional competitiveness is fostered at home, Michelle and Cindy’s story is a refreshing reminder of  just how beautiful sisterly love – and by extension, the bonds of  family – can be in the real world. On the more romantic side of  things, we’ve also highlighted a number of very talented people who work behind-the-scenes of  what most people see as the ultimate expression of  love: marriage. We talked to designers Rinaldy Yunardi and Hian Tjen, wedding decorator Nefianto Setiono, along with wedding organizer Fenny Palijama to get unique insights into what it takes to create the perfectdream wedding. Looking into their personal and professional journeys can be quite inspiring as well.

As we find ourselves getting ever closer to marking our second full year living in the middle of  a world-wide health crisis, I believe it’s more important than ever to remain vigilant of  the many other health issues that might lurk in each of  us. As it so happens,  this November sees Yayasan Jantung Indonesia – the Indonesian Heart Foundation – celebrating its 40th anniversary. To mark this milestone, Prestige Indonesia teamed up with the organization for a special feature. As part of  Yayasan Jantung Indonesia’s 40th anniversary, the foundation held an auction to raise funds for its many programmes. Participating in this auction is a long list of  artists, fashion designers, socialites and more, each donating a special item to be sold for charity. So, we’ve interviewed some of  these auction participants, along with some of  the people behind Yayasan Jantung Indonesia, to gain some new insight into the foundation, its mission in promoting cardiovascular health and its fight to make treatments more accessible to those in need. And I do hope that these stories can, in some measure, inspire all of  us to take better care of  ourselves – especially with regards to our hearts – and also for us to look after those who are unable to. Beyond our Yayasan Jantung Indonesia stories, and as many of  you have surely noticed by now, we are welcoming a long-time friend of  the magazine for her tenth appearance on our cover: the one and only Adinda Bakrie. We certainly had a great time catching up and learning more about her life journey in a special photo shoot with Louis Vuitton. Last year, when the pandemic started in earnest, Prestige Indonesia went into a short print  hiatus. In mid-2020 we returned with a special issue dedicated to Bali – in anticipation of  the island’s assumed reopening near the end of  the year. Unfortunately, on the one hand, things didn’t really go as everyone hoped it would, with the health crisis taking a turn for the worse. On the other hand, however, Bali saw a slow but steady march towards recovery, sometimes interrupted by new restrictions, but often punctuated by new success stories. And for the past year or so we’ve checked back on the island when big launches and exciting debuts occurred. For this issue, however, we took a closer look at Bali as it is today, and went there to talk to some extraordinary people in our quest to rediscover the pulse of  the island and gain new insight on its path to recovery.  So, in the following pages you will encounter conversations with an art collector, a celebrated chef, a veteran hotelier, a healer couple, and a talented photographer. Their stories paint a new picture of  how life in Bali is right now, and what paths it will take moving forward. And crowning our October 2021 issue is a special photoshoot in collaboration with our friends at Dior, featuring the beautiful Velove Vexia, with the newly-opened The Langham, Jakarta – which is in itself  another sign of  the resilience of  our country’s tourism industry and hotel business. Of  course, we also have plenty of  stories from the world of  haute couture as well as haute horlogerie, and many other facets of  the finer life. Happy reading...

One of  our three cover stars in this issue, Anggis Dinda, shared a particularly beautiful quote at the end of  her interview with us. It’s a line from a poem by Persian poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī: “Let the beauty we love be what we do.” I think this notion is especially important today, as the world seems to be on the verge of  recovering. For this occasion, Prestige teamed up with ERHA to feature three beautiful ladies who – as it turns out – have stories to share about the many ways that the idea of  “beauty” can manifest itself. Besides Anggis Dinda, who, by the way, is one of the creative minds behind Indonesian fashion label Pramesvari, we also talked to aesthetic doctor and beauty influencer dr. Merry Kusumawati, whose well-informed and educative online presence offers a breath of  fresh air in today’s social media landscape. And rounding up the trio for this issue is a long-time friend of  the magazine, the one and only Wanda Ponika, who once again teaches us the beauty of giving. Wanda’s social activism and charitable works have always been commendable, and her latest initiatives are definitely inspiring. Also in this issue, we explore the many ways that fashion makes the world more beautiful. For one, we reached out to Denica Riadini-Flesch whose social enterprise SukkhaCitta shows how fashion can make the world a fairer place. Then we also talked to Janice and Benita Setyawan, the co-founders of  Maquinn Couture, for an in depth journey into the more artistic soul of  fashion design. With Toton Januar we delve once again into the realm of  sustainable fashion, and in a catch-up interview with Harry Halim we discuss about the move towards genderless fashion. Last but not least, we chatted with the three founders of  Tulola – Sri Luce Rusna, Happy Salma and Franka Franklin-Makarim – to learn more about their approach to handcrafting and empowerment. Beauty, as the saying goes, is in the eye of  the beholder. 

By the time you’re reading this, Indonesia has just ended – or extended – yet another 
period of public restrictions. On the one hand, that these restrictions were necessary in 
the first place is exceedingly worrying. On the other, just looking at the rate of vaccination 
slowly moving upwards can be quite heartening. Looking even further outward at the 
number of nations that have reopened their borders is similarly reassuring.

Speaking of which, for this issue’s cover, we actually did a photo shoot in the United 
States, with none other than Bling Empire star and producer Kelly Mi Li. Her story 
of success – both on- and off-screen – is certainly inspiring and enlightening. And to 
further this theme of positivity, we caught up with Putri Arif Febrila, one of our 40 
Under 40 alumni, to learn more about her sustainability-focused business. We also have 
stories from the Gelang Harapan movement as told by its three co-founders, Amanda 
Soekasah, Janna Soekasah-Joesoef and Wulan Guritno.

Of course, besides being inspirational, we always want the content of Prestige Indonesia
to be aspirational as well. And to that end, we have plenty of new updates, new highlights, 
new launches from the worlds of fashion, watches, travel, fine dining and more. And on

Today, more than ever, our lives are dictated by technology. And that might just be a massive understatement. On the other hand, perhaps we do underestimate just how much technology shifts our lifestyles, especially since we tend to think only of  the big, flashy revolutions. So, for this mid-year issue of  Prestige Indonesia, we took a closer look at some of  the less grandiose but still meaningful ways that technology can and has changed our lives.

This year, 2021, was meant to be a turning point where the idea of  a post-pandemic world becomes closer to reality. We have plenty of  challenges ahead of  us, along with plenty of  hiccups that have caused us to stumble, but I think it’s safe to say that, overall, we’re heading in the right direction. In our previous issue, we explored the rising confidence from one of  the hardest hit industries, travel and tourism. In this edition, we take a look at 40 personalities leading the charge towards change in their own respective worlds.

Travel has always been one of my chief passions. In a way, I guess I consider myself as much a citizen of the world as a I do a resident of Indonesia. So, since the start of the pandemic, I have kept an even closer eye on travel-related businesses, the hospitality industry, airlines, and the like. I take note of – and sympathize – with their struggles, what with them being some of the hardest hit by the crisis, the way they adapt, and the way they work out a path towards recovery.

Art Unbound it has been almost a year now, since our lives took a turn into unprecedented territory. And ever since, we’ve been trying to adapt. Throughout the past year, Prestige has presented dozens of names and faces of those who have led, inspired, or paved new ways to adapt and grow. For this issue, we look at the world of design and art, which has indeed adapted to the realities and needs of this new world we live in. Not only that, art and design have grown and thrived.

FIELD OF DREAMS With 2021 having started in earnest, it’s fair to say that the initial buzz of jubilation with the coming of a new year – especially following one as challenging as 2020 has faded away. Yet, there is an unmistakable sense of optimism, of hope, that persists. After focusing on survival for so long, we now dare to dream again. And that is exactly the story we hope to tell in this issue of Prestige.

By now, most of us are probably glad that 2020 is coming to a close. It has been, without doubt, one of the toughest years in living memory. However, it has also been a year that highlighted the best of us. For the past few episodes, Prestige Indonesia has brought you stories of heroes, of people who have gone out of their way to help those in need, people who create opportunities for those who have lost their livelihoods as well as those who thrive in adversity while at same time lifting up people around them.

There is perhaps a bit of irony in the way that the pandemic we’re currently in has become one of the greatest motivators for us to pay more attention to our health. As we continue to face social distancing mandates, lockdowns and the ever-present sense of uncertainty of a global crisis, we have been compelled to be more attentive to our physical fitness, our constitution and our psychological or mental wellbeing.

Preparing Prestige’s signature 40 Under 40 list has always presented a unique challenge. I guess it goes without saying that this year, it was even more challenging, especially when – in the middle of this September – Jakarta went into lockdown once again in what is popularly known as Large-Scale Social Restrictions 2.0.

In the immortal words of Coco Chanel, fashion changes, but style endures. So, once again, Prestige Indonesia presents its Fashion Issue, and once again, we look at what endures and what changes. Now, beyond the transition of spring/summer to fall/winter, we’re also seeing change being driven by both technology and our new, more homebound lifestyles.

This year has seen no shortage of  problems, the ongoing pandemic being at the forefront of  just about everybody’s minds. Thankfully, we have also been blessed to see so many people who – in the face of  a seemingly insurmountable challenge – choses to become part of  the solution. This issue of  Prestige is dedicated to and created in celebration of these people – these heroes, these figures who took action where others faltered.

For our cover story, we welcome back a long-time friend of  the magazine, the one and only Cathy Sharon, who shares with us stories about her philanthropic initiative project to provide medical supplies for hospitals and how it has reached far and wide beyond its initial scope. We also have stories chronicling the unique ways many individuals and groups have contributed in the fight against the pandemic, from Kevin Osmond and the Masker Untuk Indonesia movement that aims to encourage mask use to Suhaila Nordin and Aliza Salviandra Sutowo who have tapped into the power of  storytelling through BAGI for Bali. We hope that their stories inspire you as much as they have inspired me.
