当机夹刀具例如钻头或铣刀与工件发生碰撞时，会产生极大的撞击力。最坏的情况是，电主轴的组件会损坏或完全毁坏，由此产生的维修和停机费用最终会高达数万美元。在使用机床时，主轴碰撞是最常见的事故之一，而相当令人吃惊的是，业界并没有付出很多努力来开发智能保护系统。
市场上现有的标准系统一般依靠压缩元件，主轴组件虽然不会受到影响，但仍然要停机来更换压缩元件，以及调整主轴单元并重新安装。MS电主轴碰撞保护系统是一种内置永磁体的双法兰系统，能克服这一缺点。当刀具和工件发生碰撞时所产生的力超过预定的阈值时，系统会在造成任何损伤之前将其分开。详情请见本期《将主轴碰撞损害最小化》。
即使对飞机燃油效率进行很小的改进，也会对经济和环境产生很大影响。密歇根大学的研究人员使用Stampede超级计算机成功实现了喷气式飞机的新型机翼设计，能减少燃油燃烧，并改进设计工具，以帮助航空业制造更高效的飞机。他们采用了多学科设计优化方法将许多因素和高保真模型组合成一个耦合计算的优化问题，并测试了新设计在可能的飞行条件下的完整性。目前，他们正在与巴西航空工业公司一起合作来评价这种算法，同时还与庞巴迪、波音和空客一起讨论其实用性。请见本期《飞机的燃油高效设计》一文。
