The annual pilgrimage the international design community makes for Milan’s Salone del Mobile and Design Week is unlike any other. Over 370,000 visitors pour into the city each March for the Fiera alone, not to mention the increasingly important satellite events that spread across the city.  

Each year the event seems to be even bigger and more spread out than the last, forcing journalists and editors like myself to literally run between events, appointments and interviews. Spending time in the back of taxis or squeezed into metro cars though can mean missing out on one of the simple pleasures of Milan – la passeggiata. The relatively small and intimate city is truly best experienced by foot, and especially so during the pleasant spring weather we were blessed with this year.

Our coverage of Salone del Mobile and Milan’s Design Week will be spread between our website and a new section we’re introducing to the magazine, entitled Fiera, where we will showcase our edit of the world’s best design fairs. We hope you’ll enjoy!

Each year we dedicate an entire issue to one country. This year we’re casting our curatorial eye over the world’s largest archipelago, the fourth most populous country and the fourteenth-largest in terms of overall land area — Indonesia. The aim with our annual editions is to shine a light on a country within the region that’s under-represented and underappreciated from a design perspective. And there are likely not many more deserving than Indonesia.

It’s no secret that this is a country made up of talented creative people who are equally warm and welcoming. (What’s less known is that 70 per cent of current architecture graduates in Thailand are female.) Needless to say, this has been a fun issue to research and compile.

In this issue of Design Anthology, we celebrate the creativity of Taiwan. The young product designers, the creative entrepreneurs, the exceptionally talented interior designers and architects, the artists and curators, the insightful city planners, and yes, as unlikely as it may sound, the government.

Welcome to the annual summer edition of Design Anthology. This is one issue the D/A team looks forward to each year for the mix of tropical, waterside and weekender homes that leave me dreaming of a sunny getaway. All the more so this year, as anyone living in Hong Kong can attest, as one of the coldest winters on record has become one of the greyest and dreariest springs I can remember in my ten years in the city.

Let’s hope the skies are clearer and the weather a little sunnier by the time this issue goes to print — but just in case, we have a selection of suitably wanderlust-inducing homes from  Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore to sate your appetite.

We have our usual roundup of hotel openings, plus a longer feature on what we believe to be a game-changer in the hospitality scene: the new Katamama hotel in Bali. Run by Indonesian hospitality group PTT Family in an Andra Matin-designed building, and with interiors that brim with locally sourced furnishings and objets d’art, the Katamama brings new meaning to the word ‘authenticity’.

Issue 8 of Design Anthology is a special edition on all things travel. 

As well as giving our regular updates from the design world, we take a fresh look at the interplay between travel and design. Recognising the often-central role that travel and exploration play in stimulating the creative process, we feature some of the world’s top designers speaking about their favourite places to visit, what inspires them and personal rituals surrounding the act of travel.  

In addition, we take an industry perspective, looking at how a compelling design story is increasingly key in giving destinations the competitive edge with a modern traveller who is considerably more cosmopolitan in outlook, with discriminating tastes and demands to match.

Manila, with its wealth of creativity, gave us the idea to create a series of special editions entirely devoted to a single country; the Philippines stars as our first featured location. It may seem an unlikely choice to some, but ultimately we felt strongly enough that the country’s untapped trove of design treasures and destinations was deserving of some of the limelight otherwise commandeered by its better-known neighbours.  This issue sees us visit a few standout locations including designer Eric Paras’s A11  Gallery in Manila, the award-winning restaurant Antonio’s in Tagaytay, the DEDON factory in Cebu and their luxury resort on the island of Siargao. We visit the homes of some of the country’s best-known and most celebrated designers, including Cynthia Almario (of Studio Almario) and Kenneth Cobonpue, to name just a couple, and you’ll get a glimpse into Manila’s newest boutique hotel, The Henry.  This is by no means an exhaustive representation of the design scene in the Philippines, or even Manila for that matter. But don’t take my word for it — go and check it out yourself!

We’ve had a great time finding five homes around the world that create the mix we hope to be known for, all with some of that beautiful summer ambience. First cab off the rank is a chic beach shack in the Australian coastal town of Mullumbimby, designed by Hong Kong-based style maven Debra Little. From there we travel to Vietnam where we have the pleasure of giving you a tour of Vietnamese journalist/poet and urban activist Nguyen Qui Duc’s weekend getaway in the hills of Tam Dao, a two-hour drive from Hanoi. Next up is our cover story - Thai architect Kulapat Yantrasast’s own Los Angeles home, followed by our first Indian residence, a weekender in a seaside suburb of Mumbai owned by a busy Delhi-based couple. And last but not least— jetting across the North Pacific we land at another seaside residence, this time a stunning two-storey home in Newport Beach designed by another Hong Konger in Deborah Oppenheimer. 

But as ever, that’s not all.
