There are some genuine ‘blast-from-the-past’ guests in this month’s Everton magazine.

Nearly 50 years ago, England staged the biggest football tournament of the lot (and won it, of course!) and along the way, Goodison Park staged some of the most memorable matches.

Four members of the Portugal side that defeated the great Brazil and then North Korea, both played at Goodison, were in L4 recently as part of a TV documentary and it was an emotional return for them.

Another surprise visitor was Everton’s first-ever Promotions Manager! David Exall was tasked with, amongst other things, compiling the great Harry Catterick’s programme notes and, as he told us, it was no easy task!

Managing Mickey Thomas was never simple either – as even Howard Kendall found out! The charismatic Welshman recalls his fall-out with Howard that ended his Blues career and assesses the current side.

Of course, the class of 2015/16 are just a two-legged tie away from Wembley in the Capital One Cup. We preview that semi-final clash with Manchester City and take you behind the scenes at the Riverside, where the Toffees overcame Middlesbrough in the quarters.

Throw Leighton Baines, Joel Robles, Roberto Martinez, David Unsworth, features on the 1938/39 title winners, our last Christmas Day fixture in 1957 and rare colour shots from the 1985 Championship lap of honour at Goodison into the mix and you’ve got a right Royal Blue selection box that will keep you entertained well into the New Year!

Merry Christmas from everyone at Everton Football Club!
