How do we react when unexpected things—such as a job loss or a health problem—happen to us?
How do we react to predictable daily events?
We often react to events in a way that causes more misery. Many people get depressed by they way they habitually react to things.
We are in the predicament we are in because we misinterpret the world around us. We try to control what we cannot and fail to control what we can.
The basic conclusion of Stoicism is that the world around us—the externals—has nothing to do with our happiness or otherwise. It all depends on how we interpret the impressions.
Yet what is simple in theory is not so simple in practice. When we face a difficult situation, we are confused. We are not sure how to react. So it is always good to think about different challenges we may potentially face in our daily life and be prepared for them. It helps us to develop a Stoic perspective.

More than 250,000 around the world have lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 3,500,000 have been diagnosed with it.
Compared to the world’s population of 7.5 billion people these are small
numbers.
But when it touches us or someone dear to us, the proportions are irrelevant.
To be concerned about oneself is natural. 
Given this how do we, as Stoics, mediate on how to live the right way?
In this issue, our contributors share their contemplations on different aspects of life to help us make the right choices in our journey towards the good life.

The essence of Stoicism  is not in its theory but in its practice. If so, it cannot be beyond the grasp of people like us, who are not professional philosophers.
Anyone who is interested in the art of living should be able to practice it. But how? If it is for everyone, where do we start? How do we apply it to different aspects of our lives?
It can be a little complicated. To practice Stoicism, we need to translate our knowledge into practice. This is not always easy to do. We can all do with some guidance here.
No worries. Our excellent team of modern Stoics shows us how. No aspect of life is too trivial. Here’s what we have for you in this issue.
The art of living revolves around the question ‘what is the best thing for me to do right now?
Stoicism asks us to practice virtue and avoid vice. But how do I apply this to the
predicament I am in now?
Stoicism says: Go figure it out. Kai Whiting shows us how to do this and how we can fend for ourselves. Sharon Lebell selects five specific Stoic principles for
these uncertain times.
At a time when we are “forced” to stay home, Flora Bernard poses the question,
“What does it really mean to be free?” and provides an answer. Using the Stockdale
paradox as an example, Greg Sadler asks us to balance our optimism with realism.
