In this issue

Welcome to issue 140 of The GameOn Magazine! The
weather is changeable, so that means that Summer is
on the way! We’ve ordered some extra fans to cool
down our typing (and gaming) fingers in the coming
months, but while we wait for those to arrive we
decided to create this issue!
We have a number of bits of hardware in our articles
this month, as well as a couple of first looks. Admittedly,
since we were given those first looks literally just before
the new Apex Legends and Warhammer: Vermintide 2
content came out, they’re a little outdated. You should
still give them a look, though, otherwise Luke played
about eight hours of Apex Legends for nothing! There
are a bunch of other things to read, just in case those
two aren’t your kind of thing.
We did make space for an interview, though, so don’t
worry if somehow none of the articles catch your eye.
We sat down with Scott, the lead 3D artist behind the
YouTube channel Unreal Cinema, which is making a
miniseries in Unreal Engine 4 about Star Wars: Knights
of the Old Republic.
There are a bunch of previews, so I won’t mention them
all. Suffice to say, some are in Early Access, and some
are due out really soon! One may be out by the time you
read these words…! It’s Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. That’ll
be out by now.
Finally, our reviews are all high scorers this month! I’m
kidding, of course, we gave one 3.5 out of 10! But it’s not
all bad news, with some very high scores - including our
cover star… Read on to find out how much we talked
about Lady Dimitrescu, and many more.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey

From the very beginnings of Elite Dangerous’Kickstarter, being able to experience the universe from your avatar’s own two feet has been something “on the roadmap” although it was never guaranteed to make it into the final game. Some six and a bit years later and the newest expansion, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, will finally let commanders stretch their legs and finally get out of those cockpits.

Under the Jolly Roger

Wouldn't life as a pirate have been dull? Weeks on end with nothing to stare at but the endless ocean stretching out before you, the rotting timber of your ship and the increasingly jaundiced faces of your crewmates. As an honest depiction of the tedium of maritime life, Under the Jolly Roger is a spectacular triumph. Of course, this also means it's a spectacular bore, and no amount of pirate action, nor magical relics, mermaids or sea monsters can change that.

Smelter

Smelter begins with a running start. You are instantly thrown into a beautiful anime-like intro that tells the backstory of our main character Eve. Eve is a character inspired by the biblical story of Adam and Eve. However, in Smelter once Adam eats the forbidden fruit a huge explosion occurs destroying the world they are in. We see Eve falling, surrounded by darkness with no end in sight. You won’t get bored watching this because an entertaining narrator jumps in describing the predicament that Eve is in with a ton of detail. Don’t criticise him too much, he’s just trying to do a good job.

Resident Evil Village

The Resident Evil franchise is a series that hasn't been afraid to push itself into new directions. What started as a survival horror game with minor action elements was turned around with the arrival of Resident Evil 4, and then pushed out into action-adventure territories even more so with RE5 and RE6. This was followed by a harsh pull back into almost pure survival horror with the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7. It’s been four years since the last major release for the franchise, and March this year saw the 25th Anniversary for the series' inception. In that time, Capcom has made a lot of strides, and Resident Evil Village is the ultimate culmination of what Resident Evil should be, hand-picking the greatest aspects of the series into a single, well-oiled machine.
