In the December issue of The Landy Magazine, we investigate Land Rover’s long-lasting royal connection; a relationship that has endured since before the Series I first went on sale. Truly individual Range Rover restorations are increasingly rare things, but Jimmy Whitmore’s 1987 Classic is one of a kind. Definitely not done to a formula, it started as a low-miler with what he describes as ‘the hookiest MOT ever’ end emerged from his workshop as a work of engineering to be proud of.

You’d think there’s no longer any such thing as a Series I that’s not worth saving. But when Gary Jones was asked to drag an old Land Rover out of someone’s garage, what he found was in such a state that it really was touch and go.

We didn’t think the day would ever come when we review a vehicle in The Landy that wasn’t built by Land Rover. But then along came the Ineos Grenadier – the truck which is, arguably, more of a Land Rover than anything Land Rover itself has made in the last seven years.

Does this mean you should buy one? You’ll have to read this issue of The Landy to find out. But let’s just say The Grenadier is a spiritual successor to the old Defender in more ways than one…

You could say that hybrids weren’t built by Land Rover either, though obviously in this case it’s a bit different. Equally obviously, buying somebody else’s old one is a minefield – but we’ve got a Series II coiler in this issue which proves that it can be done.

The same could be said for ex-council work trucks, too. Avoid like the plague? Maybe, in the case of a clapped out modern pick-up. But when it’s a 109” Series III that’s already been rebuilt once, you’re on safer ground.

That’s the joy of the old. But did you hear about Land Rover launching a special-edition Range Rover for a quarter of a million quid? Just imagine much of the old tech you could buy with that…


Two very different kinds of camper feature in this month’s issue of The Landy.

One is a 130 ambulance that’s been converted by RIG Automotive into an incredible high-spec luxury home from home. Complete with the latest tech and a slide-out bike carrier – plus its very own bike – it’s a new take on the sort of lifestyle Defenders that are all the rage nowadays.

February 1983 marked a pivotal moment in Land Rover’s history – the original introduction of the 110.

Back the, Solihull was coy about whether this was to be a replacement for the 109 or a new model sitting halfway between the Series III and the Range Rover. Forty years on, we know the answer – but looking back at the words of a leading 4x4 journalist at the time, as we are in the February issue of The Landy, makes for fascinating reading…

So too does the 107” pick-up in this issue, not to mention the Macneillie limousine – possibly the one and only example of a stretched Range Rover made by a company better known for armouring them.

Talking of Range Rovers, Project Cassis is a restoration with an emotional background to it. Imagine your dad’s long-lost old motor, the one you learned to drive in, turning out to still be around… but on death’s door. You know what you’d have to do, right?

Most readers of The Landy still think electric vehicles are a terrible idea. Maybe it’s because they’re yet to be convinced of the environmental case for switching to battery power, or maybe they just like their Land Rovers the way nature intended. And it’s ok for both to apply. But either way, we don’t hear a lot of love for electric conversions round here.

Everybody admires a good resto-mod, though. Even if it’s not the specific kind of truck you’d buy, a really imaginative and well executed restification always looks the part.

So what are you going to make of Lunaz’ new Range Rovers? Seldom have we seen a Classic looking more like a modern concept car. They are, by any measure, superb. But what’s under the bonnet? Here’s a clue, it’s not a V8…

We’re also looking at a 90 this month with a rather more traditional form of repower. Its old pre-Defender engine has gone, to be replaced by a more modern diesel – which these days almost inevitably means a BMW M57.

But wait, what’s this? Look below the surface and you’ll find that this
90 has something even more remarkable going on too…
Finally this month, we’re looking back to the days when Disco 1s were plentiful and turning them into winched-up dogs of war was the most natural thing in the world. That’ll be one reason why there are so few left today – but it wasn’t half good while it lasted.

Travelling across Africa is a dream for many British Land Rover owners. 
But what when you’re actually from Africa?

The answer is that it’s still the dream. When a Landy specialist from Chartwell, Johannesburg, hit on the idea of restoring a Series III then driving it ‘home’ to Chartwell, Kent, it was the beginning of something very big involving a convoy of seven Landies and a charity auction at one of the UK’s leading salerooms.

Talking of Land Rovers that get around, the Congaree 90 is the latest resto from Legacy Overland. Built in Solihull, worked to near-death in France, reimagined in Connecticut… and every inch a truck to cherish.

We’ve got the story of an ex-military 109, too, that’s a bit of a rarity in that all its MOD history is intact. Plus, at the other end of the scale, Bowler’s new second-generation version of its Defender 90 rally car, wisdom on winter driving and the latest reliability survey to, er, ‘mention’ Land Rover.

If you thought the Series I was the first Land Rover, think again…

It’s already a quarter of a century since the first Freelander was made. 
And it was the template for everything Land Rover has created ever since. The time will come when the company’s history starts for real in 1997, with those first fifty years of making funny off-road trucks a mere footnote in the tale of a luxury car brand.

You may or may not agree with this, far less like it, but the Freelander was a massively significant part of the Land Rover story. And this month’s Landy contains a feature on what must be one of the very earliest surviving examples – a pre-production model whose purpose in life was to be fawned over by the adoring press.

At the other end of the scale, we’ve got a Discovery 1 rebuilt as a tube-bodied special. Or, if you’re the kind of Land Rover owner who probably drives one of those modern motors the Freelander heralded, how does forking out for a place on one of the world’s ultimate off-road adventures sound? The Rhino Charge is unique – and you could be part of a British team going there next year to compete aboard a very special Landy…


If you’re the sort of Land Rover fan who’s always on the lookout for their next project, there’s a vehicle for sale in the current issue of The Landy that could become the jewel in the crown of your collection.

Any 109” Dormobile is special. But the first one ever produced? Now, that’s a historical marker and no mistake. It’s been stood since 1989 and needs the full works – but with all its fixtures and fittings still in place, and its cupboards full of period items from the 1970s, it’s a future concours winner and no mistake.

Talking of the period accessories that make a truck right, also in this issue is first-run Range Rover In Vogue? Is it complete, we hear you cry? And the answer is yes. If you know your In Vogues, you’ll know it’s not the vehicle itself that we’re referring to here…

At the other end of the evolutionary scale, the electric conversions come thick and fast – and we’ve got the story of the latest. Unlike most, which will cost you more than a new Range Rover, Electrogenic’s is aimed at Defenders which work for their living. Intriguing…

We’ve got news of an adaptor plate for DIY electric conversions, too, should you fancy a bash yourself. All you need is a crashed Nissan Leaf to plunder. Just promise not to buy that old 109” Dormobile and turn it electric, or the classic car people really will have the knives out for you…



This month’s issue of The Landy covers the latest chapter in the electric Land Rover story. It might not be one you like, but it’s not going to go away – and as John Brown 4x4’s new EV conversion for the Series II and III illustrates, there’s no such thing as a Land Rover that’s immune from being dragged into the future.
Mainly, though, we’re enjoying vehicles from the past. A Range Rover 20th Anniversary model, for example, is a rare thing indeed, in part because it was a limited edition but mainly because it was never sold in the UK. 
And while there are plenty of restified 90s and 110s out there, it’s not so usual to find one that’s been ‘lifestyled’ – but without losing its work-truck honesty. A Defender like this is kind of like the aftermarket equivalent of an original 90 SV – cool but not unusable. When you see our cover vehicle, we think you’ll agree.
There’s the usual recipe of Landies for sale, buyers’ info, products and news from around the scene, too. Including a stunning new creation from Bowler – which also fits the ‘cool but not unusable’ description. Especially if you want to use if for trying to catch James Bond…

One of the great things about older Land Rovers is their flexibility. The 109" Series III in the new issue of The Landy, for example, can be a pick-up or a hard-top, or it can be completely open. It's also a perfect example of the other way in which Land Rovers are flexible, too – because when it got old and tired, its owner simply rebuilt it and now it's ready for the next half-century of its life.

Will we be saying the same about the new Defender 130 fifty years from now? Time will tell. But what we know for now is that the new adventure wagon for all the family is a lot different from the 130 of old. Just a smidgeon pricier, too…

This issue also contains the story of a British team bringing home a notable victory in one of Africa's toughest off-road challenges, plus news from every corner of the Land Rover scene.

Restoring Series trucks is often about making them look ‘right’ – as in, as close as possible to the day they left the factory.

But more and more people are adding their own touches, creating leafers with as much individuality as any boutique-spec 90 or 110 – and usually a lot more charm. The 88” Series IIA gracing the cover of this month’s issue of The Landy, for example, was finished off with some absolutely unique touches – including the teak floor from, would you believe, a Sunseeker superyacht.

By contract, a new Discovery might sound a little mundane. Until you drive one, at least. We’ve tested the entry-level D250 model this month – and it makes a very strong case for not spending a penny more than you have to.

There’s a magnificent 300Tdi 90 in this issue, too, which has been restored into an all-terrain camper of the highest order. Or if you fancy the idea of a Land Rover that’ll actually earn you money, as opposed to the other thing, how about a 109” Series III that’s been turned into a mobile bar? Very, very cool – and, at the time of writing, up for sale.

Some people shudder when they see a classic Land Rover that’s not as ‘right’ as possible. Others just appreciate a great truck.
Your view on the 107” Series I Station Wagon in this issue of The Landy will very much depend on which of these camps you’re in. It’s been brought back home after a life of hard work in Australia… then fitted with a Tdi engine, Stage 1 axles, full-syncro box and 265/75R16 tyres on deep-dish rims.
An abomination? Some will say so. But it was restored to be a usable classic, not a collector’s item. As far as we’re concerned, it’s an outstanding example of both.
The modified Td5 90 in this issue is an outstanding example of something else, which is how easily a Defender can get under your skin. Its owner only bought it to carry him mountain bike around… but next thing he knew, it had turned into a self-propelled Terrafirma catalogue.
There’s news of Land Rover fans rallying round to help medics in Ukraine, too, as well as a revolutionary new way of cleaning rusty chassis and body parts without damaging them in the process. And we have an appreciation of the life of Tony Gilroy, ‘the man who saved Land Rover’ and the genius behind the creation of the Discovery. A hero indeed.

The Landy is 100 issues old this month. And to celebrate, we’ve taken a look back at the stories that were making the news when we first launched.

Sadly, our main headline was about the latest attempt by anti-vehicle haters to have Land Rovers banned from Britain’s green lanes. And the main headline this month, too? The same story, the same haters, the same lies, you name it.

Elsewhere, back in 2014 Land Rover had a simple message for its fans who were worried about what the new Defender was going to be like: tough.

Other classic features revived from back in Issue 1 include a beautifully restored Series II with a modern twist going on beneath its bonnet and a bobtailed Range Rover built by a professional engineer who wanted to show the world how it should be done. And still in the mood to celebrate, we’ve taken a look back at the 110 the team at Arkonik built to mark a milestone of their own – whose interior is still perhaps the coolest we’ve ever seen in a Land Rover.

There’s plenty of current stuff in this month’s Landy as well, of course, from restos to rally reports. And most of all, this issue contains your FREE guide to the Great British Land Rover Show at Newark on 1 May – which, in the first full show season since 2019, is reason enough to celebrate on its own!

Back in the day, loads of people cut up Series Is to make off-road specials of one kind or another. The number of precious classics we lost this way is beyond imagination, but one thing is for sure: everybody who did it wishes they could undo it again.

Well, almost everybody. There’s a 1955 86” in this issue of The Landy with a Ford V6 engine, Series III gearbox, steering and axles, parabolic springs and fat mud-terrain tyres.

Ruined? You might consider it so, yes, depending on your view of what a classic Land Rover should be. But this one’s owner must have had a crystal ball – because next to it in his garage are all the original parts he took off back in the day, ready for when someone wants to turn it back into a matching-numbers original.

Where Series Is have gone, so might 90s and 110s one day. Or have they already? Most people seem to be turning them into blinged-up street machines now – but we’ve also got a feature on one that’s been modded the traditional way as a green lane weapon and general off-road toy. 
It’s good to know people like that still exist.

It’s also good to know that there are people out there who see a desert race for classic 4x4s as an opportunity to make the most of their Series trucks and early Range Rovers. There were a good many Solihull products entered in this year’s Dakar Classic, from several different nations – though none of them was Britain. See that as a challenge, y’all…

Our green lane guide in the Lake District is a challenge too, albeit a much more gentle one. Gentler and cheaper, too. Though everything’s cheap in comparison to the new Range Rover SV – care to take a guess at how much you can spend on one of these personalised luxury Landies? The answer is within this issue of The Landy… and as always, so too is a lot more besides!

The ‘rat’ look is very popular in some corners of car culture. Not so much when it comes to Land Rovers, though.
Perhaps that’s because so many Landies end up looking ratty by default that doing it on purpose would seem to be a bit contrary. But there’s a fine line between nastily ratty and beautifully patinated – and the Series IIA on the front cover of this month’s Landy is a perfect illustration of why you shouldn’t be too quick to restore the character out of an old truck. 
It has, as they say in the adverts, had all the hard work done. And now it looks just fabulously cool. Its owners use it mainly as a beach wagon, too. And what could be more car-culture than that?!

When is a Land Rover not a Land Rover? That’s the rather controversial question we’re asking in the new issue of The Landy.

If you look at the truck in question, you’ll see a Lightweight. One that’s been given the treatment in someone’s garage, for sure, but you’ll see a Lightweight.

The more you look, though, the more you’ll see that it’s a Frankenstein’s monster of bits from all over the place. Chassis from Japan. Axles from Germany. An ALRC scrutineer would have a fit.

But its character? That’s from Solihull, 100%. When is a Land Rover not a Land Rover? Not when a Land Rover is what it believes it is, that’s for sure…

There’s nothing like a bit of a back story to light a fire under a classic Land Rover. And the Wood and Pickett Rangey gracing the cover of this month’s issue of The Landy definitely qualifies.
Having previously been used as as a work truck by a road-laying crew, this precious old rarity has been brought back to its original condition thanks to a years-long restoration. And it was worth it, too. Because this is a Range Rover with real provenance, having once been the property of one of the most famous names in the history of pop music… Another classic in this issue is a pristine Series IIA that’s just finished being restored by Land Rover specialist AJD Off-Road. It’s still on its original chassis, drivetrain, axles, panels, the lot… so much so that when it came to details like sorting a hole that had been cut out of its front grille, the AJD team went to astonishing lengths to avoid having to sully it with replacement parts.
The 90 in this issue, on the other hand, is all about replacement parts – such as a BMW M57 diesel engine and 8-speed auto box. Its owner’s reasoning is that he’s made it future-proof – just in time for it to become tax exempt. Nice thinking.
Whether the brand new Velar Plug-In Hybrid we’ve tested in this issue will still be on the road for as long as that old 90 is a question we suspect you can guess the answer to. Even so, it’s a clear sign of where Land Rover’s future lies – and a pretty special vehicle in its own right, too.
But for special vehicles, allow us to point you to the recent auction at which a genuine Spectre 110 fetched more than the price of the average house. And that’s not even the special one. Elsewhere on the sale card was a 300 Tdi 90 with less than 700 (yes, seven hundred) miles on the clock. Care to guess how much it fetched? The new issue of The Landy has the answer!
