What did we keep from the 1990’s?
Even if we cherish that decade for many reasons, the idea of wearing XL pants, with our belly button all out and the unlikely highest wedges has soon swept those nostalgic smiles under the rug. However, this is a very simplistic outlook, and we all too often forget one of the major aspects of this period: the cult of the body.
This semi-dictatorship of the perfect body still applies today, but the differ- ence (and not the least) with the 90’s decade lies in three words: BEING IN SHAPE. Yes to perfectly fit abs; yes to toned arms and a dazzling smile but all while being healthy.
For a decade, that mad slimming race got us to neglect our well-being. However, it seems that fitness is on a strong comeback!
Forget about gym instructors in fluorescent tights on a cable network, the new Apostles make a name for themselves on the web. From “Black Girls Work Out Too”, to “Insanity” through the good old “PX 90”, fitness programs at home are buzzing to an increasingly younger audience.
Have those different recent food scandals pushed us to pay more attention? After all, we are what we eat, so we can question it. Another path to explore: social networks. Facebook and Instagram played a unprecedented role in the way we now curate our lives, our meals... and our bodies. The photo surge of these increasingly sculpted bodies may has eventually caused a collective epiphany. Unlike cosmetic surgery, sports is accessible to all and it lures us with great results if we are (really) motivated. The promise is beautiful, and (almost) without a risk.
At the end of the day, we can’t complain about this trend making a comeback! Therefore, we dedicated special pages full of tips and hotspots to it, because these holidays, we are not about letting our guard down. And the beautiful French actress Sara Martins, nor radiant South African singer Lira both in this issue, will tell us otherwise.
The beauty of the body is great. The beauty of the mind is even better! For this 2013 summer issue, our Culture pages gather e.ve.ry.thing you need to read, see and hear in the next three months. And of course, our fashion wishlists and photoshoots exude lightness and sunny days, from hats to sandals!
All I have to do now is to wish you an amazing summer, whether the weather allows it... or not.
