The peak demand for electricity this summer is projected to be around 16,000MW, which is around 1,000MW higher than the peak demand served last year. The demand this year may even go up to 17,000MW if the summer temperature intensifies. High officials in the government expressed a high hope of being able to meet the demand with having much higher installed power generation capacity of 24,114MW as well as well-prepared transmission and distribution systems. Despite depleting foreign exchange reserves and short-supply of US dollars in the country, they are hopeful about arranging necessary foreign currencies to be required for importing fuels and running the power plants. According to an official estimate, fuel imports would require around US$ 1.0 billion every month for the next six months. Experts, however, are skeptical about the country’s capability to supply required fuels – gas, coal and oil – for power generation up to the mark as a shortage of forex is already prevailing in the country as reflected in the import restrictions imposed by the authorities concerned. They also apprehend that the existing dearth of dollars would continue for some time now, affecting the import of fuels.

It would be dangerous to put additional pressure at this moment on the dwindling forex reserve. It would be better negotiating bilaterally with the fuel-supplying countries to get deals on deferred payment mechanisms. Getting an increased amount of loan from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) could also be a solution for the time being.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.

It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.

In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.

The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
