I’ve never been a big fan of riding in large groups. I’ve always found that the larger the group, the slower and more cumbersome the ride is. I understand why some riders enjoy it; it’s just never been my thing. I’m more than happy to ride with a few mates but my preference is usually the freedom and purity of the solo ride.

I’m on the track probably four or five times a year: enough to make me feel like I’m proficient but seldom enough to make me realise a racer I ain’t. As a consequence, full-leather protective gear feels heavy and cumbersome to me. Kinda part-time Iron Man (the cartoon, not the tough beach bloke), I’m stiff and pretty uncomfortable. It all makes sense once aboard, though, because what remains the same, racer or not, is the result of a track based spill. Yeah, I like good gear.
