Early March and April is a time of year that I love to hunt.
Fallow, Red and Hog deer are talked about regularly. I love
a nice crisp morning looking for Reds too and I have shared
many times with close mates doing so. Letting a roar go and
waiting for a response I guess is what puts me back in touch
with my heritage.
To me it is traditional and la chasse is something that I shared
with my family in France as a kid growing up. The region of
the Vosges is where my mother was from and my father from
Bordeaux, so my mother has the hunter and gather in her
and my father brings the good wine to the table. Although
in saying that, my father was a very accomplished hunter for
the table. I still remember sitting at the table with my family
and while eating game, one or two of us would find a pellet
in our morsel and drop it on our plate with a laugh.
These were some of the happiest and fondest times that I
shared with my family and as we have all grown up, we now
have our own children that we will pass that tradition on to.
In my household it is small goods that seem to keep my kids
connected to hunting. Kabana, smoked venison and salami
seems to have the kids with their hands out for a few pieces
at the kitchen bench whenever I am cutting up a batch.
To me that is what it is all about, to head out into the bush or
on property and harvest game for the table. To prepare,
cook, indulge and reap the rewards of a successful hunt. To
break bread with family and friends, to me that’s Tradition
and Heritage right there!
