The attraction of steel is hard to ignore, especially when it comes to hot rodding. Rod Collins is no enemy of repro hot rods, but an unchopped, 1933 Ford coupe was always on his bucket list and the stunning black five window on the cover of this month’s edition is the result. Sharing the space is Anthony Spadavecchia’s XL Falcon ute; old skool on the outside but with a nice surprise under the hood.

We also take a look at a nostalgic T bucket which has remained mostly unchanged from the 1960s, a beautiful 1939 Ford tudor that’s taken 15 years to come to fruition, and a super slammed 1959 El Camino from California which is just plain cool.

We visited the ShowCars Melbourne PPG Showdown for their 10th anniversary event in March and bring you our favourites, we also take a tour of Eric Parker’s sprawling Chevy collection in Nuriootpa, South Australia. Finally, we chat with Rohan Hutson of Australian Auto Air about business past and present.

Aussie Norm introduces father/daughter team Mathew and Heidi Saunders in Cruzin the Salt, music fans will learn about Arty Hill’s new album, and we check out the very sensual artwork of Fiona Stephenson.

It’s an all-Chevy cover this edition, but you’ll agree that both of these bowties are very cool cars. Cheryl Cook’s 1948 pickup is a little different than most, a not-so-common Aussie-assembled variant of these popular pickups, and it’s Australian heritage posed some challenges along the way. Even more challenging was Dan Heidke’s 1934 Chevy, self inflicted we might add, as he went out of his way to distort the proportions of the tudor, and then finished off every square inch flawlessly.

Dave ‘Shorty’ Smith’s Model A delivery will have you hunting for a body for your next project. Good luck with that, it’s all steel and a rarity downunder! So is Peter Caruso’s 1956 Buick Roadmaster convertible, a luxury bohemoth cruiser that drives better than it looks thanks to a late model Hemi and Jag suspension. Heading to the USA, if you thought Blake Weddington’s ’40 Merc bared a resemblance to famous Matranga Merc of the 1950s, you’d be right… it’s no accident!

When it comes to extracirricular activities in this issue, numero uno is the Hot Rod and Custom Auto Expo in Sydney. Easily the best ever, we’ve dedicated more than a dozen pages to the weekend, and still only scratched the surface. We also head to country Victoria to take in Autopia and learn a little more about the ongoing development of the Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre, spotlighting metal crafter and artist, Glenn Rewell in the process. We also have a chat with Sharon and Steve at premium T-shirt outlet, Captain Shirty, before reminiscing about Euro-rockers, Carolina & Her Rhythm Rockets.

Rebelene may be a stray cat’s tune, but it’s not the reasoning behind Greg Forster’s 1961 Cadillac with it’s radical roof swap. The unfinished Caddy languished in American chop shops for decades until Greg shipped it to Australia and brought it to life in spectacular fashion.

The old school crew will enjoy our interview with Paul McMullin and his collection of flathead Ford hot rods, which he enjoys with both his father and his son by his side. In a similar father-son tale, Michael Ahrens pieced together a neat 1932 Ford pickup for his dad, but with a slight twist. Don’t worry, you’ll dig it! Rounding out our hot rods is Earl and Connie Teichmann’s 1935 Chevy Delivery, a home built hauler which has lots of miles ahead of it.

We also wander the streets of Rockhampton during the innaugural Rocky Nats, check out beach racing under lights at the 2nd Normandy Beach Race in France, revisit the Chrysler-crazy Azzopardi’s for a peek inside their retro playroom, and check out what’s in store at Adelaide resto shop, All Car Restorations.

Speed thrills, and so will the line up of hopped-up hot rods in our latest Speed Edition, Cruzin issue #244.

Of course, speed is a relative thing. Mention 300 horsepower to a modern day racer and they’ll scoff. Tell a hot rodder you’ve got a 300 horsepower flathead Ford and you’ll get their attention! Case in point is Tom Fulton’s ’34 Ford coupe, our cover car for this issue. If that Ardun-headed flathead V8 doesn’t grab you, the savage chop and lean, mean styling certainly will.

If you’ve admired the unique creations of Norm Longfield throughout the decades, then his boat-tail speedster will not disappoint! The pre-war racer is better than new with dozens of exciting details, yet still retains its old world charm.

And where would we be without the gassers! Chris Williams’ 1939 Chevy pickup has been on the scene for decades but never looked this good, while Lennart Olofsson’s 1953 Dodge Cornet shows us that the Swede’s love their straight axles too! Rounding out our feature cars is perhaps the hottest of them all – Rachel and Warren Azzopardi’s 1925 Dodge pickup. It’s muscle originates from the 1960s, a 413 Chrysler Wedge with a rare pair of cross ram manifolds which no hot rod hood can contain!

Yep, there’s drag racing too as we visit Carralbyn air strip drags for some old school action. We also drop in on Chris Palazzo who celebrated his 50th birthday with a gathering of friends and a drum of nitro. The cars drank more alcohol than the boys did!

Finally we head to California and tour the Rick Lorenzen collection, a more incredible display or racing memorabilia you’re likely to find. While we’re in the USA, we look at the creative collective of Chris Piscitelli, and Dale Haberfield steps in for The Glovebox to review James Hetfield’s book, Reclaimed Rust, a beautiful volume showcasing his own collection of custom cars.

Model A Madness! We’ve been a little light on Model A Fords lately so for this edition we managed to put together three of them. There’s a sweet full fendered coupe, a Studebaker-powered roadster and our cover car, Pete Gardner’s hiboy pickup, but each one of them stands alone as a very cool hot rod.

Speaking of cool, Rod Cahill’s 1934 Chevy tudor is certainly a hot rod with a difference, thanks to its Ford Y-block V8. As far as putting Ford engines in old Chevys, it’s not his first offence! Slower and lower is Daniel and Cassie Vortmans’ 1954 Chevy, an oh-so-mild custom that proves tasteful is graceful.

We managed to make it down to the Adelaide Extreme Auto Expo in January (postponed from November) and it was well worth the trip! We’ve included our coverage in this issue, along with a visit to The Depot Historic Vehicle and Memorabilia Collection in Deniliquin, NSW. We also catch up with Al at Armadale Auto Parts in the west to see what’s in the shop.

It seems nobody likes commercials, unless they’ve got wheels! We’ve packaged another convoy of cool pickups, deliveries and vans into Cruzin #242, our second Hot Rod Haulers theme’d issue.

If Bob Puglisi’s 1933 Ford pickup was ever a farm truck, it’s now retired for good, stunning in every detail and featured on the cover of this edition. Other earlies incude Dirk Evers’ 1933 Dodge Commercial Sedan (when did you last see one?) and Joe Gomboc’s timber-back ’34 Chevy from sunny Queensland.

Sharing the cover is Joanne Darwin’s 1959 Chevy El Camino, low slung and sporting mild kustom touches, it’s hard not to fall in love with. But it wouldn’t be a pickup edition without some fat fender 50s trucks, so we’ve included Bill Jordan’s 1950 Chevy and Troy Pudsey’s 1955 Ford F100. Talking F100s, the surprise package is Phil Meredith’s 1957 F100, it’s beautiful and has a few tricks up its sleeve as well.

Just for fun, our California correspondent tags along for the So-Cal Slow Ride, a coastal cruise dedicated to vans. Love or hate the 1970s, you’ll love this flashback of side pipes and shag interiors… oh wait, it’s happening now!

We also chat with PoA – Pinups of Australia, look at the custom furniture of Juliette Schmitt at Friki Tiki Funk, and check some online vids with English Dane Rockabilly.

There’s not much that hasn’t been done to a 1932 Ford but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a statement. We love everything about motor trimmer Peter Goodgbun’s deuce roadster which features on our cover this month, and you will too.

Keeping good company is a pair of tough, chopped hot rod coupes – Wayne Chapple’s ’34 Ford and Danial Robinson’s ’35 Chevy are driven hard and often! If we’re talking muscles, lets not forget John Fuller’s 1956 Ford Mainline post sedan, a unique beast from a family of Ford enthusiasts.

Looking for a change of pace? Then Dale French’s 1936 Ford 3W coupe will leave your mouth watering. With this much cool, who would want to be in a hurry.

The GM guys will get a kick out of our tour of the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky, but then again it’s the kind of place that any auto enthusiast can appreciate. Then in total contrast, we head over to the UK to check out the beach racing at Pendine Sands which looks like it could have taken place even before they made a Corvette!

Last but certainly not least is our dedication to the late John Winterburn, aka Stomper, a legend in the drag racing community throughout Australia and the USA, and we thank his friend Lex Swayn for compiling this tribute.

But wait, there’s more! We also catch up with Aussie band the Flattrakkers, we look at the pinstripe and kustom art of Jarmo Nuutre from Estonia, and as usual our thanks go out to Mitzi & Co for our stunning centrefold.

Patina is the new perfection! Once again we’ve gathered a handful of cool rods and customs which all share one thing in common – they celebrate imperfection. From 50 year old show cars and rusty rigs to barn find muscle cars and elegantly aged early Fords, this edition will have the perfectionists seeing red… oxide that is!

To be fair, each vehicle in Cruzin #240 has a special story behind it, and is perfect in the eyes of its creator. We also check out a collection of Model A Fords before bumping up the horsepower and looking at a family of rare 60s muscle cars that are being given a new lease on life after deteriorating in the Arizona desert for decades. Lone Star Body Shop in NSW shows us around his workshop and the hot rod Diamond T in the making, and we revisit our first Rat Rod Day from 20 years ago. Also, Norm Hardinge contacted his buddies in the USA to give us a report on Bonneville SpeedWeek and their performances.

We also check out Miss Lily Moe’s new album, Wine is Fine, catch up with artist Larry Grossman, and Mitzi & Co has provided yet another fine pinup centre poster for this special themed edition.

Just like life, hot rodding has its highs and lows. We celebrate them all in Cruzin, be it slammed pickups like Rob Veitch’s 1959 Chevy, or raked Model A’s like Al Fountain’s coupe, that both feature on the cover of this edition. But wait, there’s more!

Joe Rippon is reliving his childhood through his cars, and his stunning 1934 Ford coupe is another star car in this issue. You’ll appreciate both the journey and the end result. David james’ 1940 Ford from South Australia is as neat as a pin without blowing the budget, and the custom crew will dig Steve Ide’s chopped 1950 Ford.

We also squeeze in our visit to the Rich River Rod Run earlier this year, along with a fly-by at Andy’s Restorations in Sydney. Last but certainly not least, we pay tribute to the late Don Orosco, lover of speed and all things hot rod.

Sharing the cover is something in total contrast, Gavin Stevens’ custom bodied Model A roadster and budget builders will appreciate the tale.

Tony Fox fulfilled a life long dream to acquire a sharp Model A tudor and tells his story within. Rounding out the hot rods is Next Gen rodder, Toby Cook and his four-slug Anglia, a tidy streeter in every sense of the word.

We targetted Aaron Vanderstaay’s 1958 Chrysler Plainsman some time ago and pleased to present it to you this month. A father-son project, it’s rare and unique and perfect throughout. If it’s a little too stock for your liking, then the trio of custom cars from Japan will blow you away!

We also look over the 2020 Kustom Nationals at Phillip Island and the National Chevy Festival in South Australia, then fill you in some interesting facts on identifying tyres.
