One in Bollywood: Actors aspire to reach the top spot. Filmmakers affix ‘one’ as a kick starter. Viewers rush to catch the First Day, First Show.
One portion meal: Do you like cooking and ordering for one?
One minute: How often do you try to get away from situations by saying, Bas, ek minute?  
One rupee: The times when a single rupee was quite valuable.
One channel: When DD1 was what we all watched, together!
One game show: When Omung Kumar’s show challenged us to complete tasks in a single minute.
One song: When Ek Chidiya, Anek Chidiya taught us about unity in diversity.
One crores: When KBC took our level of obsession with the number one to another level!
And more…

Our first vehicle was either an LML Vespa or a Bajaj scooter, followed by a Fiat Padmini. We don’t throw a toothpaste tube away until we’ve squeezed every little bit out of it. When our first television set came home, we put a tilaka just above the screen, before we switched it on. No old t-shirts, napkins, sarees, et al are ever thrown away. We carry with us the tiny bottles of lotion, shampoo, and body wash. Oh, we love sales, discounts, and bargaining is in our DNA. We ask when we need something and are told why we can or can’t have it. Education loans for further studies are what we believe is the best way to earn a degree. Oh, we love the arts and crafts projects courtesy of Best Out of Waste, it is in our DNA. We’re middle-class Indians.

The making of the pickle special edition too started with simple, humble memories — in this case, preserved, delectable, and aromatic memories. By the end of it, we were nostalgic. How does one define a pickle craving? Is it merely for the taste buds? Or is there more to it? Watching granny shoo away birds on the terrace, directions to not put a wet spoon in the pickle jar, school lunches holding paratha and achar, of daughters hoping to replicate mums' magic... How does it feel to be a shoe? We answer the question. Weaved into a garland, hurled in anger, and removed outside a temple (before seeking blessings). In this shiny Hair special edition, we re-lived the times when there was more to hair than good, bad hair days.  The traditions of tonsure. The changing face of the barbers. We hit the rewind button, and we paused to observe the current hair trends on the silver screen. Accessories that adorn our tresses, the aromatic gajra to the maang tikka; and the clips and bands. We dressed up our mane. We tied braids, we poured hot coconut oil in tiny bowls, we watched fathers teach their sons how to shave, we learnt about the origin of shampoo and more. The fancy world of 2000s, is no comparison to the simple, humble one of the 90s. So in this special winter edition, we invite you to sit back and indulge in all things that made growing up in the INDIA of ‘90s a wonderful time. Yes, we just hit the Rewind button. Read on, re-live.

Our second birthday special: Colour, Culture and Chaos. Our Dubai-based enthusiasts play with these three words and share what they mean to them in their land, heart and mind! In the 100 pages: Poems, canvas prints, short stories, sculptures, plays and more.

You don’t need to belong to a certain religion, eat a particular cuisine or be born on its land to become a Delhiite. All you are required to do is announce that Delhi is your home and watch it become just that! Yes, becoming a Delhiite is actually that simple! For, Delhi is not just the capital of our land but a dream, a faith & a way of life. In this edition, we celebrate the capital that is home to one and all, whether for a short while or a lifetime. At the outset of the edition that you are flipping through now we were greeted with these remarks: ‘An entire edition on the desi cow? How much can you write about the cow? What is there to write about the cow?’ Our answer as always was, ‘Let’s discover’. 

So here we are celebrating the Indian cow.  Now the three words that came up each time we began to ponder over the Indian cow were: Holy. Milk. Traffic Jams. So, we bring you tales on worshipping the cow, the milk products it offers and of course, a piece on how the cars came later and the roads, rightfully, belong to the cows foremost.

As we explored the world of bovine deeper we learnt that the cows had mood swings and quirks. We mooed along. We also observed they were being ill-treated (cattle trafficking) and forced to eat garbage. We realised the cow’s home turf had changed and it now lives beyond the boundaries of farms, cow shelters and villages. We wondered how the Indian cow feels about the Swiss cow. We engaged them in a ‘conversation’ and it left us amused. We spoke to men & women who are fighting for the humble animal. We learnt that the harmless cow sought nothing else but a little care.  Yes, the Indian cow is not asking for us to worship it, it is just asking us to act human. Can we do that?

And on a lighter note, we bring to you the cow charisma on and off the ramp. We ride on the cow…err…bullock cart. We stop by to look at the cow dung cakes. And more. By the end of it, we felt 100 pages were too little to know the desi cow! Next time, may be. 

Yes, the Indian cow is worth more than the image of it mooing on the greens, strumming a guitar on your tee-shirt and disrupting traffic on streets.

Last December (2014) we had taken a tough decision when we launched our gloomy  ‘Fight the plague: RAPE’ edition on December 29th (the day when we failed Nirbhaya & she succumbed to death, leaving us all with her spirit to fight). We were told to step back and not think like patriots or activists. We didn’t listen to the sales team ( they said they will not be able to bring revenue for such an edition) or the editorial experts (who said that the readership of the magazine will fall drastically): they both were right for we didn’t make money and our readership numbers fell too (in comparison to issues on other themes). But we felt we had done the right thing for we’d reached a handful who promised to fight for this cause & keep the anger alive. 
More the voices, more the awareness.  
The blitz of words must continue: Our guest editor, Promod Puri had signed off his edit note for the ‘Fight the plague: RAPE’ edition last year. 
So this December too when we found ourselves facing the same turmoil we left it to our readers to decide if we should celebrate the New Year with a fresh edition or use this time to reach a few more hundreds and make a small difference. Our readers (via  a poll) suggested that even if were able to educate one mind on the issue & stand up to fight for the cause it would be worth it. So, here we are back with our edition from the last year and asking a simple question: Has anything changed? Yes and No. Have we lost hope? No.
In the year 2015, we are not going to moan and complain; instead we are going to educate & fight. And yes we are also going to celebrate the ‘new’ INDIA: the INDIA, which is not scared to speak up. 


Years pass by and we look back and wonder if in between…
Eating yummy lunchboxes she packed for us. 
The classes she picked us up from.
The exams she helped us prepare for.
The teenage heartbreaks she nursed.
The outfits she chose for us and dressed us in.
The phone calls she made when we forgot to return her call.
The patience she showed when we threw teenage and later, adult tantrums.
The hugs she engulfed us in even when we were wrong.
The tears she swallowed to make us believe that all was well.
The goodbyes she said, which made her very sad.
The praises she showered when we took our first step & later got our first raise.
The pain she hid when we hurt her.
The pillar she became when we felt everything was falling apart.
 … Did we ever tell her how honoured we are to have had the chance to love her, know her and being nurtured in her arms? 

This  माँ special edition is for each one of us who want to tell their mums how much they mean to us. Yes, this is for you and your maa, amma, mata, ammijaan, mummy, maa-go, mommy, ammi, mama, pabbo and maujo.

Over a cup of chai: The Indian Trumpet\'s tea edition.

Chai is a sensitive & sweet subject for us Indians; it’s not a beverage but an emotion. The sound of water boiling on the pan, the whiff of tea leaves filling up the room, the conversations that happen over a cup … cha or chai is a tradition with us. It’s a drink that runs in our ‘veins’. So when we prepped ourselves to make this chai special edition it was natural that we first put the kettle on and then brain stormed. During the course we learnt that everyone enjoyed their tea in a different way be it when it came to its preparation, type or accompaniments. For a few the tea spelt grandma’s love, for many it brought alive the memories of the college canteen, many shared how the cup made their mornings brighter, countless spoke of how they loved the teatime that they shared with their partners and yes, everyone mentioned that a cup of chai made spending hours at work less painful. We found ourselves connecting over the humble chai, irrespective of whether it was served in bone china cup & saucer, pragmatic Styrofoam cups, rustic kulhads or commonplace steel glasses.

So, get yourself a steaming cup of chai & sit back to flip through the aromas, flavours, memories and joys of chai.

2014. We’re at the starting line yet again. Beginnings are beautiful, powerful and pure. We extend warm wishes to each one of you & your loved ones. We hope and pray that 2014 is a year full of love, courage and luck for one and all.

2013. It was a year that was ‘welcomed’ in the midst of screaming headlines of gang rape. We were shattered, experienced shock. We woke up, fought back. We cried, held hands. We protested, said prayers. We stood by each other. We realised it could have been ‘us’ instead of ‘her’. We found strength from Nirbhaya. 

Are we still there? Have things changed? Have we become more sensitive? Is there hope? Will justice be delivered? Will our mind sets change? Will we be able to fight this plague? Yes and no. We find answers to the many questions in this woman special edition. And guiding us and walking us through this issue is an NRI & ex-editor of a weekly newspaper with a contribution of over 30 years towards active journalism our guest editor Promod Puri.  

On 16th December and the days to follow we held our heads tight, hands on our ears. People were talking, panicking, protesting, screaming and wailing. Someone was chanting a hymn. Many were flooding the ‘authorities’ with their questions. We couldn’t see the commotion and pain that engulfed India because we were not \'home\'. We could sense it. The sound of fear was ear deafening. We just needed a moment of quiet, to think, to figure out what we wish to pray for... And this issue is all about the ‘wish’ we need to pray for, fight for, hope for, live for… 

We pray and hope that in 2014 we witness moments when the mind sets stop hurting, the unreported gets reported, the courageous find their smiles, the words get heard and acted upon, justice gets delivered… and we all experience togetherness, love, courage and strength.

We often find it difficult to choose between the two. While goodbyes come with a lot of experiences, lessons and memories; helloes bring with them a lot of hope, cheerfulness and excitement. When we started working on the last issue of 2013 we had a lot to look back and learn from. We were on an emotional roller-coaster ride as we experienced happiness, pride, shame, joy…  

So, in this issue…

We look back. We celebrate Bollywood lives that left us. We pay tribute to the Indian telegram, which decided to give way to technology. We get teary-eyed, angry and hopeful as we recall the good, bad and ugly moments of 2013. We switch TV channels to watch the old wine served in a new bottle. We get our satirical best as we summarise the political moments of 2013. And more.

We look forward. We bring to you the trumpet teller of 2014, which tells you what the stars have in store for you. 

We celebrate. We tempt you to jump on the New Year Resolutions wagon, yet again. We invite you to sing the Christmas carols.

We learn. Staying connected to one’s root is the best way to live, grow and succeed. 
And we learn this from none other than the Michelin starred Chef Vikas Khanna. We bring to you an interview with the humble and sexy NRI. We won’t blame you if you fall in love with his persona and cooking, all over again. 

We pledge. We will keep the anger alive. We won’t let the screaming headlines on gang rapes in India fade off, till we smell change. Beginning with this issue, we would bring to you our readers views on the topic of women safety and respect. Will you join us in this fight?

Spring, summer, autumn and winter. 
We love the flowers that bloom in spring, the watermelon we eat in summer, the yellow leaves that adorn the roads in autumn and the warmth of quilt in winter. Yet, none of these seasons is our favourite season because the season we love and wait for the most is the festive season. Yes, it is this time of the year that we treasure the most. The mess on the streets created by the vendors selling cotton balls, Chinese fairy lights, paper lanterns & more; the incessant honking of the vehicles snaking on the road to reach the spot where the effigy of Ravana would be burnt; the air filled with loud chants of Ganapati Bappa Moriya; the sight of children atop the shoulders of the elders meandering through the Durga Puja pandals, the generous helpings of sheer kurma and payasam…  

We know that it is tough to be away from home on festivals. So, this time around we’ve filled up our pages with the aromas, warmth, colours, love, rituals, excitement and memories of Indian festivals.
