Let’s consider the situation where an employee discovers that the company carries out fraudulent accounting practices. The employee approaches the public authorities with this information so that appropriate action can be taken against the company. This good faith reporting by the employee is called whistleblowing. Simply stated, whistleblowing is the act wherein the public or authorities are informed of an illegal activity taking place in an organization. The person who reports such activity is called the ‘whistleblower’. Once the ‘whistle is blown’, since whistleblowers are the ones who report the information, they face the risk of undergoing reputational and other severe damages. Most countries, realizing the importance of providing safety to a whistleblower, has adopted policies and safeguards for whistleblower protection. Most of the Middle Eastern countries have adopted several laws
pertaining to whistleblowing and for the protection of whistleblowers. However, it is important to note that a whistleblower has to inform the police department or the concerned authority and not the public, so as to avoid liability for defamation.
