Gangtok is a study in contradictions. The capital of Sikkim seems too full of concrete boxes, but its location in the valley means you also get great natural beauty, great weather and great views – especially of the mighty Kanchendzonga. There are plenty of atmospheric monasteries and a unique museum to visit, the zoo is sweet, and more active visitors will find it a good base for trekking.
Choose to visit between October and December and March to May for clear views of the Himalayas. If you go in March and April, you will see the rhododendrons in their full glory.
