<p>Sheeba Ameer&rsquo;s daughter&rsquo;s last words to her were a cry for help. Not for herself, but for thousands like her who battle the deadly disease of cancer and do not have enough support. &ldquo;Every time I would sit by her hospital bed, she would say, &lsquo;Ma, Don&rsquo;t sit here. There are other children who need your support. They might not be financially well off like us and you can help them&rsquo;.&rdquo; It has been three years since she lost her daughter (she was 13) to acute myeloid leukemia, but Ameer says she sees her in every child she has helped fight the disease since. Ameer runs an organisation called Solace that provides financial aid of almost ₹8 lakh every month to the many beneficiaries she works with. Solace has successfully helped over 1,000 patients so far. The initiative has received liberal donations from supporters across the world. &ldquo;When I started Solace in 2007, I knew nothing about even the idea of working. I had always been a homemaker. My husband too wasn&rsquo;t supportive of my decision. He couldn&rsquo;t fathom how I could not be there for my daughter and instead help other kids. However, it was my daughter who inspired me.&rdquo;</p><p>Based in Thrissur, Kerala, Solace has three centres and a team of almost 40 people who take care of the smallest needs of cancer patients. From counselling family members to extending financial aid, Solace supports cancer patients in every possible way. &ldquo;During her treatment, my daughter was sharing a room with another child whose parents, unfortunately, were not as financially secure as we were. It broke my heart to see the helplessness in their eyes and the pain of losing their child due to lack of financial resources. That is when I decided that I would do something about it.&rdquo; Ameer began volunteering for the Pain and Palliative Society in Kerala and worked with them for almost seven years. She also opened a small workshop where she employed only women to create bridal garments. &ldquo;The idea was to make women from underprivileged backgrounds, especially those who are dealing with the illness of a loved one, financially independent and self-reliant.&rdquo; When Ameer finally began Solace in 2007, her goal was to help save at least five families. &ldquo;We have almost 1,300 children registered with us right now. We have been able to help 200 children completely recover from their illness.&rdquo; Ameer eventually wants to establish more centres. &ldquo;Cancer takes a toll not just on the patient, but on the entire family. At such times, not just physical, but even emotional support is of paramount importance. We hope to open more counselling and welfare centres soon and touch as many lives as we can.&rdquo;</p>
