Liora gains confidence and sparks romance when she dances with a close friend at the Mardi Gras ball
The glittering chandeliers of the Mardi Gras ball reflected on the polished floor, casting a magical glow over the bustling room. Music swirled, laughter echoed and the whirl of vibrant gowns and tailored suits created a kaleidoscope of celebration.
Liora stood at the ballroom’s edge, gripping a chair for support, her masquerade mask hiding her unease. Her sequined green dress shimmered under the lights, but it felt like a disguise—an illusion of her old self, the woman who had once graced stages as a ballet dancer.
“I can’t believe you talked me into this,” she said under her breath, her voice carrying a mix of nerves and annoyance.
Beside her, Gavin, her physical therapist and unexpectedly persuasive plus-one, adjusted his black mask and smiled, his hazel eyes warm. “Not so bad, is it? You look incredible, by the way.”
She rolled her eyes but couldn’t entirely ignore the warmth his compliment brought to her heart. “You’re lucky I didn’t cancel.”
“I’m lucky you’re stubborn enough to show up,” he teased. “Come on, Liora. You’ve faced tougher things than a Mardi Gras ball. This is supposed to be fun.”
