War Torn Hearts

The Russia-Ukraine war started in 2022 and has greatly affected millions of people, especially mothers trying to protect their children during this chaos. Among many stories of bravery and heartbreak, five women with children managed to survive and find hope despite the destruction. These are the stories of five women and their children in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Olga was a mother of two young children living in Kyiv when the war began. As the bombs got closer to the capital, she knew she had to leave. One early morning in February, she took her children and some important belongings and fled the city. With little time to waste, Olga boarded a train to western Ukraine, hoping for safety. Along the way, she saw other families trying to escape the violence. Many were on foot, carrying only what they could hold.

imageThere were times when the children felt scared and wouldn't speak, and Olga did everything she could to comfort them. The journey was long and exhausting for her, but she never showed weakness in front of her children. They were her strength. When they reached a refugee centre in Lviv, Olga found temporary shelter and worked hard to support her children, often taking odd jobs.
