Youngster Rehan is making waves

As Rehan Somaweera snaps on his mask and snorkel he looks like any other kid off for a splash in the sea. But for the adventurous schoolboy, the ocean is far more than just a playground.

Last August, the Perth boy became one of Australia’s youngest authors of a scientific paper at just 10. In it, he explained the discovery he made when he was in the water, snorkelling after a common octopus.

“I’ve been snorkelling with my dad since I was four. I love the water and nature,” Rehan tells Woman’s Day. “About a year ago I saw this octopus. We were in Mettams Pool where we often went. When I swam next to it, I noticed a brown wrasse fish always followed.”
