Amanda reveals how her family and a return to Italy helped her heal

Nearly 20 years have passed since Amanda Knox, a then 20-year-old American exchange student studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, returned to her villa to find her housemate Meredith Kercher brutally murdered.

And while the world has mostly moved on, namely the internet sleuths who have all found a new true crime case to sink their teeth into, the case's reluctant poster girl is still trying to make sense of it all.

"When I came home from prison, I had this idea in my mind that I would get to have my life back. But I didn't. My life was utterly changed," Amanda tells Woman's Day, of the crime she and her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted of committing and which saw them jailed for four years. They were later acquitted in 2015.

"I was in a really bad place for a long time, and even though I wasn't technically in prison anymore, I was certainly in a prison of this trauma and the world's making."
