Time to go SOLO?

The best cure for restless nights might be a lot simpler than you think

Time to go SOLO?

Partner been keeping you awake for the past few years? If yes, then a 'sleep divorce' might be just what you need. This is when a couple chooses to sleep apart, despite being together and happy within the relationship. It prioritises quality rest so that one or both partners can benefit from a better night's sleep than they'd get in the same bed.

But while opting for solo beds may seem drastic, it's actually more common than you might think, and the trend is growing, with nearly one in six* couples now sleeping separately - an 8%** rise since 2009. 'While this may seem unusual, it's not something to worry about,' says sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan. Here's how to successfully navigate a relocation to the spare room.

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR YOU

There are many reasons why an otherwise happy couple may choose to sleep apart, says relationship therapist Alison Tinsley. These include:

HEALTH CONDITIONS A sleep divorce could be for the short term, such as during a bout of illness. Or it may be a long-term option due to illness or a condition that requires frequent trips to the toilet during the night.

MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS Up to 80% of women are affected by hot flushes due to hormonal changes, and many may find that night sweats are easier to manage when sleeping alone.
