Linda Standish is a middle-aged Scottish divorcée who works for the council's Unclaimed Heirs Unit. If someone dies alone, she tidies up what is left of their life and tracks down any living relatives. Linda loves her job and she adores her grandson Zander, who has been living with her since her son divorced. But now everything is changing. Her family is moving away and Linda has been pushed into taking early retirement.

As she contemplates a lonelier future, there is one last case she needs to take, the death of a Welshman called Levi Norman, who has been living on a remote Scottish island and rarely had anything to do with the other islanders.
