I still love playing Nikki Alexander in Silent Witness, even though I've played her for nearly 20 years now. What a rare opportunity as an actor! I've loved seeing how Nikki develops over the years. This series, she and her colleague, Jack Hodgson (David Caves) are looking for someone new to run their lab as they want to be out doing hands-on stuff. So we get a new guy, Gabriel Folukoya (Aki Omoshaybi), who does post mortems with Nikki. It's lovely doing post mortems with dialogue again!

It's wonderful that the audience have invested so much in the relationship between Jack and Nikki. David and I wanted to show them working and living together and having a kind of shorthand rather than having a lot of drama in their relationship. It's right that crime-solving remains the priority of the series.
