THE WHY & THE WHICH wardrobe
Fairlady
|March/April 2026
Our key takeouts from these three stylish women: Beware of beige, never underestimate the thrill of a treasure hunt, don't be afraid to combine prints, and pair feminine and masculine pieces for a signature look.
-
Have you always been interested in fashion? I remember falling in love with fashion at a young age. My mother, grandmother and Lady Diana were huge style influences in my life then, and I played dress-up almost every day from my mother or granny's wardrobe.
What are some of your favourite pieces that you've bought from Superbalist? Barrel jeans from Cotton On, statement boho blouses from H&M and Trendyol, oversized tees from Adidas, suede loafers from Mango and statement jewellery from Zoe on Trend are just some of the many items I've bought this season.
Any underrated brands we should keep an eye out for? Forever New and Ted Baker.
What is the one trend you just cannot get on board with? Tabi flats! I just can't understand the split-toe pump look.
Any trends circling back that you are excited to see again? The '80s power dressing trend is back, but in a new and exciting way. YSL introduced strong shoulders, leather and billowy skirts on the runway for winter 2025, and I just love the rich colours and textures. It feels fresher and more luxurious than ever.
Trainers as workwear: yay or nay? And if yay, what is the key to making the look work? Yay - 100%. Pair them with a chic two-piece suit and frilled-collar blouse to balance the serious with street appeal.
Tell us about three unique fashion finds in your wardrobe, and where you got them.
1. An asymmetrical leopard-print Gavin Rajah red-carpet gown that I got from an end-of-season sale at his atelier.
2. A Miu Miu black two-piece suit from Stock Exchange in Kloof Street.
3. A no-name silk brocade evening coat from the '60s that has red silk lining. I think I thrifted it from one of my old favourite stores like Glitterati or Second Time Around in Cape Town.

The BOOK THIEF
Our daughter, Twenty-Five, is standing in front of me, bristling with indignation. Unusually, this time it's not me who has given her the giant pip; it's her brother, Twenty-Six. Apparently he lent two of her favourite books to someone, and when she wanted them back, he couldn't remember who.

Misti Haircare x Actives
After building brands for others for more than 20 years, often as a single parent and sole provider, Misti Watson reached a point of depletion. The pressure to deliver for clients while raising two daughters felt unsustainable, so she finally turned towards an idea she had carried quietly for years. In 2024, she took the leap to create a brand of her own, and 14 months of determined work later, she launched Misti Haircare x Actives.

The DEPO-PROVERA PROBLEM
For decades, women have been told the shot is simple. Safe. Convenient. One injection every three months, no pills, no questions. Except there are questions. Depo-Provera has shaped millions of women's bodies and lives, yet its risks have often been whispered, buried in footnotes or not mentioned at all.
