The Women's Refuge patron pays tribute to the survivors whose lives have been changed by the organisation
-

For more than four decades, Judy Bailey has been a trusted journalist sharing New Zealand's stories. Her calm presence guided us through some of the country's most defining moments. But behind the scenes, Judy has also been a tireless advocate for women and children living with the devastating reality of family violence. As Patron of Women's Refuge, she has witnessed firsthand the extraordinary courage of survivors and the life-changing work of the organisation that supports them.
In this candid conversation, Judy reflects on her first encounter with the refuge movement as a young reporter, the moments that have stayed with her and why she believes ongoing support is so critical. Above all, she pays tribute to the strength and resilience of the women and children who, with refuge by their side, are breaking the cycle and building safer futures.
Judy, how did you first become involved with Women's Refuge?
Back in the '70s, I was was a young reporter. It was Appeal week and I was sent to interview a survivor who was staying at the local refuge for that night's news bulletin.
I remember her to this day – a petite blonde housewife in her late thirties with two young children. Her husband had slammed her against a wall and broken her neck.
How long have you been Patron and what does that role mean to you?
