In a strategic shift, Mercedes-Benz takes aim at a particular segment of the EV market with the CLA Shooting Brake
-
The founders of Mercedes-Benz may have pioneered the internal combustion engine, but the marque's latest model's ancestry stretches back even further than that innovation – one that it happens to eschew, in favour of an ultramodern electric drivetrain.
The term 'shooting brake' was first used to describe horse-drawn wagons that carried guns and other necessities on hunts in Britain. With the advent of the automobile in the early 20th century, the appellation was applied to estate cars that fulfilled the same purpose. In the days of custom coach-built motoring, wealthy landowners began commissioning automobiles from prestige marques that offered the long roof and cargo space needed for hunting gear, fishing rods, golf clubs and similar sporting equipment.
By the 1950s and '60s, many one-off shooting brakes were built as customisations of sports cars, allowing landed gentry of the petrolhead persuasion to combine rustic practicality with high performance. Go ahead and do a Google image search of 'Mercedes 230SLX shooting brake' for visuals of one such modification.
