Techlife News #697

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s top chipmaker, unveiled a massive $100 billion investment to expand its U.S. operations this Monday, March 3, standing alongside President Donald Trump at the White House.

TSMC'S BIG U.S. BET: $100 BILLION FUELS CHIPMAKING SURGE

This blockbuster pledge aims to build five new factories across the United States, amplifying an industry that powers smartphones, AI, and beyond. TSMC’s chips already drive tech giants like Nvidia and AMD, making this move a game-changer for production on American soil. What’s behind this hefty commitment, how does it reshape the chip landscape, and what does it mean for tech users now? Here's the full story, grounded in the latest verified facts.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT: $100 BILLION HITS HOME

TSMC's CEO, C.C. Wei, joined Trump in the Roosevelt Room to announce the $100 billion investment, a figure spotlighted in the company's official press release. “We're investing $100 billion in new capital to build state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the U.S.,” Wei declared, emphasizing five additional factories to join the three already underway in Arizona. Trump, in remarks captured by CBS News, called it “a tremendous move by the most powerful company in the world,” tying it to economic and security wins.

This builds on TSMC's existing $65 billion U.S. commitment under the 2022 CHIPS Act, which includes Fab 21—operational since January—plus two more in Arizona. The new $100 billion, described as “net new investment” by Wei to The Washington Post, pushes the total U.S. stake to $165 billion, a number Trump highlighted. While Arizona anchors the current fabs, the five new ones could spread wider, though specifics on locations remain under wraps.
