TSMC'S 1.4NM CHIPS SET FOR 2028, NAMED A14 DESPITE APPLE CONFLICT
Techlife News
|April 26, 2025
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's leading contract chipmaker, has confirmed plans to launch its most advanced 1.4-nanometer (nm) chips in 2028, marking a significant leap in semiconductor technology.
-

Announced at the North American Technology Symposium on April 23, 2025, the chips, dubbed A14, will utilize second-generation gate-allaround (GAA) nanosheet transistors, promising up to 15% faster performance, 30% lower power consumption, and 23% higher transistor density compared to TSMC's 2nm process. For tech innovators, device makers, and AI developers, this milestone underscores TSMC's dominance in the $600 billion semiconductor industry, driving advancements in smartphones, data centers, and artificial intelligence applications.
The A14 name, however, introduces confusion, as it coincides with Apple's processor naming convention, such as the A14 Bionic used in 2020 iPhones. TSMC's decision to shift from its "N" prefix (e.g., N7, N5, N3) to an "A" prefix for sub-2nm nodes, first reported in 2023, reflects a branding evolution but risks clashing with its largest client, Apple, which is expected to be the first recipient of these chips. With Apple booking 100% of TSMC's cutting-edge capacity for launch years, the 1.4nm chips are likely to power 2028 iPhones, enhancing on-device AI capabilities critical for next-generation user experiences.
The announcement comes amid economic and geopolitical challenges, including U.S. tariffs and China's rare earth export controls, which strain TSMC's supply chain. Despite these hurdles, TSMC's $45 billion investment in a new 2nm fab in Kaohsiung and $100 billion in U.S. facilities signals its commitment to scaling production.
As competitors like Samsung falter and Intel lag, TSMC's 1.4nm breakthrough could solidify its lead, but the naming conflict and trade tensions pose risks to its seamless execution, shaping the future of high-performance computing in a fiercely competitive landscape.
