Huawei has unveiled its first trifold smartphone, a dramatic new entrant in the foldable race that pushes design boundaries just weeks before Apple's iPhone 17 launch event.

A TRIFOLD DESIGN AIMED AT FLEXIBILITY

Unlike traditional foldables, which hinge once to create a phone-to-tablet transformation, Huawei's trifold uses two hinges to fold and unfold in stages. In its smallest form, the device functions like a standard smartphone. Unfolding the first hinge reveals a display closer in size to a mini tablet, while opening the second creates an expansive panel rivaling small laptops.

Huawei says the design targets users who need multi-mode versatility—from business professionals handling documents and spreadsheets, to gamers and media consumers seeking immersive screen space. The device supports stylus input, multitasking with up to three simultaneous apps, and a new dynamic interface optimized for the trifold layout.

Analysts note that the trifold form could solve one of foldables' enduring dilemmas: offering a big enough display without creating a bulky or impractical device in pocket mode. Still, the complexity of two hinges raises questions about durability and long-term reliability.
