Apple is reportedly preparing a new line of lower-cost MacBooks aimed at the education and entry-level markets, a move that could place the company in more direct competition with Google's Chromebook ecosystem.

APPLE RUMORED TO BE DEVELOPING LOWER-COST MACBOOK TO COMPETE WITH CHROMEBOOKS

The device, still in the early stages of development, is said to retain Apple's signature aluminum design but feature a scaled-back configuration and a more affordable price point than the current MacBook Air lineup.

Sources suggest that the project has been in consideration since mid-2024, as Apple explores ways to expand its Mac segment into markets historically dominated by Chromebooks. The company's goal appears to be balancing build quality and performance while reaching a price bracket accessible to schools and cost-conscious consumers.

POSITIONING IN THE EDUCATION MARKET

Education has long been a strategic but challenging market for Apple. Chromebooks, with their lower prices and cloud-based management, have captured the majority of K-12 deployments across North America and parts of Europe. Apple's existing offerings—MacBook Air and iPad with keyboard accessories—occupy higher price tiers, making large-scale adoption difficult for schools operating under strict budget constraints.

The rumored entry-level MacBook could mark Apple's return to the educational segment with a more targeted approach. According to reports, the device would use components distinct from those found in the MacBook Air to help reduce costs. That may include a modified chassis, a simplified display assembly, and potentially fewer premium materials while maintaining Apple's overall design language.
