Amazon successfully deployed its first 27 Project Kuiper internet satellites into low Earth orbit this week, marking the initial step in building a broadband network to compete with SpaceX's Starlink, according to a report from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

AMAZON LAUNCHES FIRST PROJECT KUIPER SATELLITES TO RIVAL SPACEX'S STARLINK

Launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, the satellites were released at an altitude of 280 miles and are designed to ascend to 392 miles for operational use. For global consumers, businesses, and tech industry observers, this milestone signals Amazon's entry into the satellite internet market, aiming to provide high-speed connectivity to underserved regions.

Project Kuiper, a $10 billion initiative, plans to deploy 3,236 satellites to deliver broadband speeds up to 400 megabits per second, with some organizations accessing up to 1,000 megabits per second. The Federal Communications Commission requires Amazon to launch half of these satellites, 1,618, by July 2026, a deadline complicated by production delays and a scrubbed launch attempt on April 9 due to weather. Amazon has secured 83 launches with ULA, Arianespace, Blue Origin, and SpaceX, but faces challenges catching up to Starlink’s 8,000 satellites and 5 million customers. The company expects to begin customer service later this year, leveraging its cloud computing expertise to target consumers, enterprises, and governments.
