Transformers play a vital role in modern electrical systems by enabling efficient power transfer between circuits through the principle of electromagnetic induction. Their primary function is to adjust voltage levels—either increasing them (step-up) or decreasing them (step-down)—while keeping the operating frequency constant.

1. Introduction

Since their introduction over a century ago, transformers have been fundamental in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. They also serve critical functions in industries, commercial facilities, renewable energy systems, and consumer electronics. The design and specifications of a transformer vary according to its intended use, and understanding these variations is essential for proper selection and application.

2. Main Categories of Transformers

Transformers can be grouped in several ways—based on voltage transformation, structural design, phase configuration, or application. The following sections explore the most common classifications.

2.1. Voltage Transformation

(a) Step-Up Transformers
•Purpose: Increase voltage from the primary to the secondary winding for efficient long-distance power transmission.
•Design Feature: Secondary winding contains more turns than the primary.
•Typical Uses:
•Power plants boosting voltage for grid supply
•Renewable energy setups matching generator voltage to transmission levels
•Medical imaging systems requiring high voltage

(b) Step-Down Transformers
Purpose: Reduce voltage from the primary to the secondary winding for safe and practical use.
•Design Feature: Primary winding has more turns than the secondary.

Typical Uses:
•Distribution to homes and businesses
•Power supplies for low-voltage electronics
•Voltage adjustment in industrial equipment

2.2. Core Structure

(a) Core-Type Transformers
•Description: Windings are placed around two limbs of a laminated steel core.
•Advantages: Easy insulation and good mechanical support.

Applications:
•Transmission and distribution networks
•High-voltage installations
