A solid option for those after a bigger iPhone, but Apple is in danger of pricing itself out of the market

Apple iPhone 14 Plus

SCORE 4/5

PRICE 128GB, £791 (£949 inc VAT) from apple.com/uk

The "Plus" is a newcomer to the iPhone lineup, supplanting the In many regards it's the same phone as the regular iPhone 14 (see issue 338, p62), but scaled up with an expansive 6.7in display. It's a tempting option if you're looking for a big-screen experience, but don't want to pay for the top-of-the-range camera and CPU of the iPhone 14 Pro Max (see issue 338, p64).

Aside from its size, the Plus looks all but identical to the iPhone 14, with an aluminium frame, glass back, notched display, pill-shaped volume and power buttons and Lightning port. It's even the same thickness as the standard model, at 7.8mm, although the larger display makes it 14mm taller. It's a little heavier, too, at 203g versus the iPhone 14's 172g, but it still feels comfortable in the hand, and super-solid as well.

The screen uses Apple's Super Retina XDR OLED technology, with a wide colour gamut, True Tone support and a claimed 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Everything from games to photos and videos looks fantastic; indeed, the extra size of the screen provides an even better video and gaming experience than on the regular iPhone 14. You also get some nice Plus-sized benefits in certain apps, such as a column of folders that appears in Mail when you hold the phone in landscape mode.
