Improving reliability and service life through gear accuracy and advanced motor control
OEM Update Magazine
|February 2026
Optimising motors and gears for energy efficiency while still ensuring sufficient load-handling capability presents several technical challenges. According to Piyush Garg, Director, Balaji Switchgears, efficiency gains in many cases are achieved by operating closer to rated torque and minimising mechanical safety margins-an approach that can restrict overload capacity during peak or transient conditions.
How do gear accuracy and motor control characteristics impact reliability and service life in continuous-operation environments?
From our experience working closely with OEMs and panel builders, gear accuracy and motor control are critical to ensuring reliability in continuous-operation environments.
Even small alignment inaccuracies or inconsistent torque delivery may seem insignificant at first, but over time, they contribute to vibration, heat generation, and accelerated mechanical wear. In systems operating 24x7, these factors often lead to unplanned downtime and increased maintenance requirements. To mitigate this, we enable access to proven motor control solutions, including precision VFDs, soft starters, and intelligent protection devices. These ensure smooth torque delivery, controlled acceleration, and stable operation under varying load conditions. By selecting appropriate drives, coordinating protection strategies, and providing structured AMC support, we help our partners manage dynamic loads effectively, maintain system stability, and significantly extend the service life of motors and mechanical components.
What technical challenges do manufacturers face while optimising gears and motors for energy efficiency without compromising load handling?
