SPEED UP YOUR HOME WIFI WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR ROUTER

Slow WiFi doesn’t always indicate that you need a new router. Most speed issues stem from interference, poor placement, and outdated settings. Here are proven methods to enhance performance using your existing equipment.

Reposition Your Router

Place the router centrally in your home, on a shelf rather than the floor, and away from walls and metal objects. Keep it clear of microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors, as these devices operate on or near the 2.4 GHz band and can cause interference. An open, high position can improve coverage by 20-50% in many homes.

Switch to the 5 GHz Band

Most modern routers are dual-band. The 5 GHz band offers faster speeds and is much less crowded compared to the 2.4 GHz band, though it has a shorter range. Connect laptops, phones, and streaming devices to the 5 GHz band whenever possible. On Windows, navigate to Settings → Network → WiFi → your network → Band → 5 GHz. On mobile devices, select the “-5G” network name if your router separates the bands.
