HOW THE IPL REWIRED INDIA'S CONTENT CONSUMPTION

From primetime television to infinite scroll, cricket fragmented, multiplied, and took over every screen you own.
There was a time when watching cricket in India meant committing to it.
You sat down at a fixed hour, turned on the television, and stayed there. The experience was linear, predictable, and almost entirely guided by the broadcast. Commentary shaped your understanding, highlights arrived much later, and the audience absorbed what was presented.
The Indian Premier League quietly dismantled that structure. It did more than modernise cricket. It fundamentally altered how India consumes content. Today, the IPL is a layered content ecosystem where matches form only one part of a much larger narrative. Around every game exists a constantly updating stream of clips, reactions, memes, analysis, gossip, and personality-driven storytelling. The final over no longer signals closure. In many ways, it signals the start of a second, more chaotic phase of consumption.
FROM SCHEDULED VIEWING TO CONSTANT ACCESS
The first major shift came with streaming. Platforms such as JioCinema, along with earlier iterations on Hotstar, broke the idea of fixed viewing. Cricket was no longer tied to a living room television. The IPL became portable. It moved into pockets, onto commutes, into offices, and across idle moments in the day. You could step in and out of a match without losing sense of what was happening.
The barrier to entry dropped significantly, and with it, the nature of attention changed. This did not just expand access. It diluted the idea of uninterrupted viewing. The IPL adapted to shorter attention spans by existing comfortably within them.THE RISE OF THE SECOND SCREEN
