Unlocking AI's true power means breaking silos, sharing data, and empowering ecosystems. Democratising data fuels innovation, enables inclusive growth, and drives a new era of intelligent, collaborative decision-making

- RAJESH GOENKA

India’s digital transformation is no longer confined to its metros. As PC adoption surges in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, a new wave of opportunity is reshaping the computing landscape. The rise of remote work, online education and regional content creators have transformed the way how Indians engage with technology. Yet with PC penetration in India still at only 15%, the market remains deeply underpenetrated and full of headroom.

India’s digital future will be shaped not just by expanding infrastructure but by rising incomes, stronger policy support, deeper local manufacturing and a massive upgrade wave spurred by technological cycles.

A perfect storm of demand

India’s PC demand is being fuelled by a convergence of multiple structural and cyclical growth drivers. First, the upcoming Windows 11 PC refresh cycle is creating significant momentum. With Microsoft officially ending support for Windows 10 by October 2025, both consumers and enterprises are preparing to upgrade older devices. Qualcomm estimates this upgrade cycle could unlock a multi-million unit opportunity in India, particularly as newer operating systems demand modern hardware with AI capabilities.

Second, rising disposable incomes are expanding the base of technology adopters. India’s per capita income crossed Rs 2 lakh in FY24, nearly doubling from Rs 1.07 lakh in FY14 (as per MoSPI data). This increase in economic stability is empowering middle-income households, especially in Tier 2 and 3 cities, to invest in computing devices for work, study and entertainment.
