WS02's founder unveils a bold blueprint for India's software independence, leveraging open-source tech, cloud localisation and a deep commitment to digital sovereignty. A story of scale, vision and sovereignty in the age of software deglobalisation

- BHARTI TREHAN

Code, control, and the cloud divide

At WSO2CON Asia 2025, Sanjiva Weerawarana, CEO and Founder, WSO2, didn’t come with a pitch deck or sweeping promises. What he brought instead was a quiet but powerful message — India needs to own its digital future. In a world increasingly shaped by software, Weerawarana made the case for sovereignty, not dependency. Control over code, infrastructure and platforms, he argued, is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity.

And India, he believes, is uniquely poised to lead that shift, if it chooses to.

India isn’t just a market. It’s a movement

The pitch was simple: if WSO2 could build a USD 1.5 million business in Sri Lanka, then India, with its scale, talent and hunger, should be capable of supporting a USD 100 million footprint.

And the numbers already tell a quiet story. With no dedicated sales force, WSO2 has generated USD 4 million in Indian business. Clients include Jio, RBI Innovation Hub and the Railway Information System. All through inbound interest.

That is about to change
