IBM AND TOKYO ELECTRON EXTEND PARTNERSHIP FOR ADVANCED SEMICONDUCTOR TECHNOLOGY
AppleMagazine
|April 04, 2025
Computer services leader IBM has renewed its collaboration with Tokyo Electron, a Japanese semiconductor equipment maker, to advance cutting-edge chip technology over the next five years.
-
The companies announced the extension during a joint press briefing, focusing on next-generation semiconductor nodes and architectures to support artificial intelligence applications. For chipmakers, tech developers, and industry analysts, this agreement strengthens an alliance that has shaped semiconductor innovation for over two decades.
The partnership builds on IBM's expertise in chip design and Tokyo Electron’s equipment manufacturing prowess, targeting smaller nodes and chiplet-based designs for AI-driven computing. Both firms aim to develop technologies that enhance performance and energy efficiency, addressing the growing demands of generative AI systems. This collaboration operates within the Albany NanoTech Complex in New York, a hub for semiconductor research hosting multiple industry players.
IBM and Tokyo Electron have committed significant resources to this effort, leveraging their combined strengths to tackle the semiconductor industry’s evolving challenges. The five-year pact extends a relationship that has previously delivered breakthroughs like a laser debonding process for 3D chip stacking, aiming to maintain their edge in a competitive global market.
FIVE-YEAR AGREEMENT TARGETS AI CHIP INNOVATIONIBM and Tokyo Electron have outlined a five-year plan to develop advanced semiconductor technologies, emphasizing nodes below current standards and modular chiplet architectures. The companies will focus on creating chips that power generative AI, requiring high performance and low energy use. This effort builds on their prior work, which includes developing processes for stacking chips in three dimensions.
The collaboration utilizes IBM's research facilities and Tokyo Electron’s equipment, combining design expertise with manufacturing capabilities.
