GOOGLE MAPS ON IOS NOW SAVES PARKING LOCATIONS AUTOMATICALLY AND ADDS SUPPORT FOR CUSTOM ICONS

Google Maps has introduced a quiet but meaningful update for iPhone users, enabling the app to automatically save a vehicle’s parking location without requiring any manual action.

GOOGLE MAPS ON IOS NOW SAVES PARKING LOCATIONS AUTOMATICALLY AND ADDS SUPPORT FOR CUSTOM ICONS

The feature, which began rolling out over the past month, brings a degree of automation that was previously absent from Google’s longstanding parking tools. Alongside the update, Maps is also adjusting how parked-car markers appear by adopting users’ custom car icons in place of the generic “P” symbol.

imageThe automatic parking save activates under specific conditions, detecting when a driver parks after using Google Maps for navigation and connecting to their vehicle through Bluetooth, USB, or Apple CarPlay. Once parked, Maps stores the location for up to 48 hours unless the user deletes it or begins driving again. While iOS is the first platform to receive the feature with default activation, Android continues to rely on manual parking saves, and there is currently no timeline for when or whether similar automation will arrive there.

The automatic system builds on Google Maps’ long history of parking-related tools, which originally surfaced years ago and later expanded into Android Auto prompts and dedicated save buttons. Until now, the experience required user input at key moments. With this new approach, the app handles the task in the background, saving both time and small but frequent interactions for those who rely on Maps as part of their daily driving routines.
